GE Gas Range Spark Electrode Replacement — What This Part Does

The spark electrode on a GE gas surface burner creates the high-voltage spark that ignites the gas when you turn the burner knob. The electrode sits next to the burner head and must be positioned correctly to arc through the gas stream. Over time the ceramic insulator can crack, the electrode tip can corrode or break, or the wire terminal can loosen or burn. When any of these happen, the spark becomes weak or misdirected and the burner will click but not light. Moisture, grease buildup, and repeated sparking cycles also degrade the electrode and its mounting hardware.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Turn off the gas supply valve to the range (usually behind or below the unit) and unplug the power cord or switch off the breaker.
  2. Remove the burner grate, then lift off the burner cap and burner head from the affected burner position.
  3. Locate the spark electrode next to the burner port (a small white ceramic tip with a wire attached) and note its orientation and the position of any retaining clip or keeper.
  4. Disconnect the ignition wire from the electrode terminal by gently pulling the wire connector straight off the electrode base.
  5. Remove the electrode keeper clip or retaining spring if present, then lift the electrode straight up and out of its mounting hole in the cooktop.
  6. Insert the new spark electrode into the mounting hole, making sure the flat or keyed side of the electrode matches the original orientation.
  7. Reinstall the keeper clip or retaining spring to secure the electrode in place, then reconnect the ignition wire terminal firmly onto the electrode base.
  8. Reinstall the burner head and burner cap in their correct positions, making sure the cap sits flat and the ignition slot or notch aligns with the electrode tip.
  9. Turn on the gas supply, restore power, and test the burner by turning the knob to ignite and verify a strong spark and immediate flame.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working around gas lines or if multiple burners fail to light after electrode replacement, call a qualified appliance technician. Gas appliance work requires careful attention to burner alignment, gas flow, and ignition timing. If you smell gas at any time during the repair, shut off the gas supply immediately, open windows, do not operate any switches or flames, and call your gas utility or a licensed technician. A tech can also verify proper gas pressure, inspect the ignition module, and check for burner orifice clogs or internal wiring faults that are beyond simple electrode replacement. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
