⚡ Quick Answer

F6 means a keypanel fault. GE says the touchpad often needs replacement. Check connectors first, then swap the keypanel assembly.

GE Oven F6 Error Code — What It Means

The F6 code on a GE oven signals a keypanel or touchpad fault. The electronic control has detected an invalid or stuck signal from the touch panel and disables normal operation to prevent unintended heating or commands. GE’s service table identifies this as a problem with the keypanel itself, and in most cases the keypanel will need to be replaced. The code can occasionally be triggered by wiring or connector issues between the panel and the control board, or by a temporary glitch that clears with a power reset.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Switch off power at the circuit breaker or unplug the range to de-energize the appliance completely before any inspection or repair work.
  2. Wait one full minute, then restore power and check whether F6 reappears. A temporary glitch may clear, but if the code returns the fault is hardware-related.
  3. Pull the oven away from the wall if needed and remove the rear access panel or control console cover to expose the keypanel ribbon cable and its connector on the control board.
  4. Inspect the ribbon connector and harness for loose seating, bent pins, corrosion, or any obvious wire damage. Unplug and re-seat the connector firmly.
  5. Replace the keypanel assembly if the connector looks good but F6 persists. GE explicitly says F6 often means the keypanel needs replacement, so this is the most common fix.
  6. Test the oven by powering it back on and pressing a few touch keys. If F6 is gone and the panel responds correctly, the repair is complete.
  7. Replace the oven control board only if you have already installed a known-good keypanel and verified all wiring, yet F6 still returns. Control-side faults are the secondary suspect when panel and harness both check out.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
GE keypanel / touchpad assemblyAmazon | Match your model number. This is the main replacement part for F6.
Keypanel ribbon cable or connectorAmazon | Order if the original cable is torn, the connector housing is cracked, or pins are pushed back.
Oven electronic control board (ERC)Amazon | Secondary suspect. Replace only after confirming a new keypanel and harness do not clear the fault.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working inside live line-voltage appliances or if the code persists after you have replaced the keypanel and checked every connector, call a qualified appliance technician. A pro can use a multimeter to trace signals at the control board and will have access to model-specific schematics and part cross-references. Also call for help if you discover scorched wiring, burnt board traces, or any sign of arcing, since those conditions point to a deeper electrical fault that requires expert diagnosis.
