GE Oven F3 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F3 means a faulty oven temperature sensor or circuit. Replace the sensor if it reads outside 1,000–1,100 ohms at room temp.

GE Oven F3 Error Code — What It Means

The F3 error on a GE oven indicates that the control board is reading the oven temperature sensor signal as out of range, open, or otherwise invalid. The control sees the sensor circuit as faulty and shuts the oven down for safety. In most cases this points to a failed sensor probe, a loose or corroded connector in the sensor wiring, or less commonly a bad main control board. The oven will not operate normally until the temperature circuit delivers a valid signal again.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the breaker or unplug the range completely before opening any panel or touching any component.
  2. Locate the oven temperature sensor, usually a thin metal probe extending into the upper rear wall of the oven cavity, and trace its wire harness to the control board.
  3. Inspect the sensor, harness, and all connectors for visible damage, burn marks, corrosion, or loose push-on terminals, and clean or reseat any suspect connections.
  4. Disconnect the sensor from the harness and use a multimeter set to ohms to measure resistance across the sensor’s two terminals at room temperature.
  5. Compare the reading to the service specification (typically around 1,080 ohms at room temperature for GE sensors, often within a 1,000–1,100 ohm range).
  6. Replace the oven temperature sensor if the resistance is far outside that window or reads open (infinite ohms) or shorted (near zero).
  7. Restore power and test the oven cycle. If F3 returns and the sensor and wiring both tested good, replace the main control board as the likely fault.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
GE oven temperature sensorAmazon | Match the sensor to your model number. Most are universal-mount RTD probes with a two-wire harness.
GE range main control board (ERC)Amazon | Only required if sensor and wiring test correctly but F3 persists. Verify part number from the existing board label.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working with a multimeter, identifying sensor resistance values, or removing the back panel of your range to access the control board, call a qualified appliance technician. Also bring in a pro if you have replaced the sensor and verified all wiring yet the F3 code returns immediately, since control board diagnosis and replacement require matching exact board part numbers and safe handling of live circuitry during testing.
