Whirlpool Range Surface Burner Receptacle Replacement Guide — What This Part Does
The surface element receptacle is the socket or terminal block on your Whirlpool electric range cooktop where the plug-in coil burner connects. It delivers power from the range wiring harness to the heating element through metal contacts that grip the element terminals. When these contacts or the wiring overheat from loose connections, corrosion, or repeated cycling, the receptacle can burn, arc, or lose grip, cutting power to the burner.
Whirlpool calls the replacement part a surface element terminal block and harness assembly or element receptacle kit. Failure usually results from loose element terminals that arc and overheat, corrosion or pitting on contacts, or damaged wiring at the receptacle. The part typically includes the receptacle block, short pigtail leads, and ceramic wire nuts for splicing into your range’s existing harness.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Surface burner completely dead One coil element won’t heat at any setting even though the control knob clicks and other burners work.
- Intermittent heating or cycling on and off The burner heats inconsistently or cuts out randomly, often getting worse when you wiggle the element.
- Visible burn marks or melted plastic on receptacle The receptacle block shows charring, melted housing, or blackened contacts when you lift the cooktop.
- Arcing or sparking at the burner connection You see small sparks or hear crackling near the element terminals when the burner is on.
- Loose or corroded element terminals The coil element terminals or receptacle contacts are pitted, green with corrosion, or don’t grip tightly.
- Heat-damaged or discolored wiring The wires feeding the receptacle are brittle, discolored, or insulation is cracked from overheating.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the range from the wall outlet or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker at your main panel.
- Remove the surface element by lifting it slightly and pulling the terminals straight out of the receptacle, then set the drip pan aside.
- Lift the cooktop by releasing any clips or lifting the front edge (many Whirlpool ranges have a hinged cooktop that props open for access to the receptacle).
- Inspect the old receptacle terminals and wiring for burn marks, corrosion, or loose connections, and note which wires connect to which terminals.
- Disconnect the old receptacle by either unplugging it from the harness connector (if equipped) or cutting the wires a few inches back from the receptacle to leave enough lead for splicing.
- Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the range harness wires and the new receptacle pigtail leads, then twist each matching pair together and secure with the supplied ceramic wire nuts (twist clockwise until tight).
- Wrap each wire nut connection with electrical tape and position the new receptacle block into its mounting bracket or holder, making sure the terminals face the correct direction and lock into place.
- Lower the cooktop, reinstall the drip pan, and plug the surface element back into the new receptacle, pushing firmly until the terminals are fully seated.
- Restore power and test the burner at multiple heat settings to confirm it heats evenly without arcing or intermittent cutouts.

When to Call a Pro
If you are uncomfortable working with 240-volt wiring or lifting the cooktop on your range, call a technician. If the problem turns out to be at the rear terminal block where the power cord connects to the range (which should measure 120 VAC white-to-black, 120 VAC white-to-red, and 240 VAC red-to-black), that repair involves the main power connection and is best handled by a pro. Also call for help if multiple burners fail at once, if you see arcing inside the control panel, or if replacing the receptacle does not restore normal burner operation. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
