Whirlpool Oven F3 E1 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F3 E1 is a shorted oven temperature sensor circuit. The fix usually replaces the RTD sensor that should read about 1080 ohms cold.

Whirlpool Oven F3 E1 Error Code — What It Means

F3 E1 means the oven control reads a shorted temperature sensor circuit. The RTD sensor or its wiring is showing too little resistance, so the control sees an impossible reading and stops.

The trouble sits in the sensor, the harness, or the control. A correct sensor reads near 1080 ohms at room temperature, so a reading far below that confirms a short.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Power the oven down at the breaker for one minute, then restore it to rule out a glitch.
  2. If the code returns, remove the rear panel and unplug the oven temperature sensor.
  3. Measure resistance across the sensor terminals with a meter on the ohms setting.
  4. A healthy sensor reads about 1080 ohms cold. A reading well below that means a short.
  5. Replace the oven temperature sensor if it reads shorted or out of range.
  6. Inspect the harness for pinch points or melted insulation that could short the leads.
  7. Reassemble, restore power, and verify the oven heats with no code.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Whirlpool oven temperature sensor (RTD)Amazon | Should read near 1080 ohms at 70 degrees F, order by model number.
Oven sensor wire harnessAmazon | Replace if a wire is pinched, melted, or shorting to the cavity.

When to Call a Pro

If a new sensor still gives F3 E1, the short may be in the harness or the control board. Have a technician isolate the circuit before replacing more parts.
