The electrode sits very close to the burner port, usually about 1/8 to 1/4 inch away, and any crack in the ceramic insulator, corrosion on the metal tip, contamination from spills, or loss of the ground connection will weaken or stop the spark.

Failure happens from heat cycling, moisture infiltration, physical impact, or simple wear over years of use. Grease and carbon deposits can also bridge the electrode to ground, killing the spark or causing weak intermittent clicking. If the electrode looks intact but the spark is weak, the ground surface where the burner or electrode bracket touches the chassis may be oxidized, or the spark module itself may have failed.

How to Replace It

1. Shut off electrical power to the range at the circuit breaker and turn off the gas supply valve behind or beneath the unit.
2. Remove the burner grate and lift off the burner cap and burner head from the cooktop to expose the electrode and igniter assembly underneath.
3. Locate the spark electrode, which is a small ceramic-tipped wire standing near the burner port, and photograph or note its position and gap for reinstallation.
4. Disconnect the wire terminal or connector from the base of the electrode, taking care not to damage the harness or adjoining ground wire.
5. Unscrew or unclip the electrode mounting bracket from the cooktop frame and remove the old electrode.
6. Clean the burner ports, orifice, and the metal ground surface where the electrode bracket or burner base contacts the chassis using a wire brush or fine abrasive pad to remove oxidation.
7. Install the new spark electrode in the same orientation, tighten the mounting screw or clip, and reconnect the wire terminal so it seats firmly.
8. Reinstall the burner head, burner cap, and grate, then restore gas and electrical power and test each burner for a strong, consistent spark and immediate ignition.
9. If the new electrode still does not spark, inspect the spark module or ignition board and harness for faults, as a failed module will prevent all spark output even with a new electrode.
