Whirlpool Gas Oven Spark Electrode Replacement — What This Part Does
The spark electrode is the small ceramic-tipped wire that creates a high-voltage arc to ignite gas at the surface burner. When you turn the knob, the spark module sends voltage through the electrode to ground, creating a clicking spark that lights the gas flow. The electrode sits very close to the burner port, usually about 1/8 to 1/4 inch away, and any crack in the ceramic insulator, corrosion on the metal tip, contamination from spills, or loss of the ground connection will weaken or stop the spark.
Failure happens from heat cycling, moisture infiltration, physical impact, or simple wear over years of use. Grease and carbon deposits can also bridge the electrode to ground, killing the spark or causing weak intermittent clicking. If the electrode looks intact but the spark is weak, the ground surface where the burner or electrode bracket touches the chassis may be oxidized, or the spark module itself may have failed.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Continuous clicking with no spark visible at the burner You hear the ignition module clicking but see no blue-white arc jumping from the electrode to the burner, indicating a broken wire, failed module, or complete electrode failure.
- Weak or intermittent spark that won’t light gas The electrode sparks occasionally or very faintly, often due to a cracked ceramic insulator, corroded tip, or poor ground connection.
- Burner sparks but gas does not ignite A strong spark is present but the flame does not catch, usually caused by a misaligned electrode, clogged burner ports, or contamination blocking the gas-air mix at the spark point.
- Visible cracks or chips in the white ceramic insulator Any crack in the electrode’s ceramic body allows the spark to short to ground inside the insulator rather than jumping to the burner.
- Carbon tracking or black soot marks on the electrode Dark paths on the ceramic indicate electrical leakage to ground, which prevents a full spark from forming at the tip.
- Electrode tip bent, corroded, or broken off Physical damage or heavy corrosion changes the gap distance and spark path, stopping reliable ignition.
How to Replace It
- Shut off electrical power to the range at the circuit breaker and turn off the gas supply valve behind or beneath the unit.
- Remove the burner grate and lift off the burner cap and burner head from the cooktop to expose the electrode and igniter assembly underneath.
- Locate the spark electrode, which is a small ceramic-tipped wire standing near the burner port, and photograph or note its position and gap for reinstallation.
- Disconnect the wire terminal or connector from the base of the electrode, taking care not to damage the harness or adjoining ground wire.
- Unscrew or unclip the electrode mounting bracket from the cooktop frame and remove the old electrode.
- Clean the burner ports, orifice, and the metal ground surface where the electrode bracket or burner base contacts the chassis using a wire brush or fine abrasive pad to remove oxidation.
- Install the new spark electrode in the same orientation, tighten the mounting screw or clip, and reconnect the wire terminal so it seats firmly.
- Reinstall the burner head, burner cap, and grate, then restore gas and electrical power and test each burner for a strong, consistent spark and immediate ignition.
- If the new electrode still does not spark, inspect the spark module or ignition board and harness for faults, as a failed module will prevent all spark output even with a new electrode.
The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro
If you are not comfortable working around natural gas or propane lines, or if you cannot safely disconnect and reconnect gas supply fittings, call a qualified appliance technician or gas-certified installer. Likewise, if you replace the electrode and verify all burner ports are clean but still have no spark or weak spark across multiple burners, the spark module or ignition board is likely at fault and that diagnosis and replacement is best handled by a professional with the correct test equipment and OEM board part numbers. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
