Whirlpool Oven Gas Igniter Replacement — What This Part Does

The hot-surface igniter is a ceramic element that heats up to prove flame and pull enough current through the safety valve circuit to open the gas valve on your bake or broil burner. When you turn the oven on, the igniter glows white-hot, then signals the valve to release gas so the burner can light. Most Whirlpool gas ovens use a flat or round igniter mounted near the burner tube.

Igniters fail from age, thermal cycling, and handling damage. The silicon-carbide or nitride element becomes weak over time and no longer draws the 3.0–3.2 amps required to open the valve. You’ll see a glow but no ignition. Physical cracks, open circuits, or burnt wire connections also stop the igniter from working. Whirlpool lists a broken gas igniter as a common reason an oven will not turn on or heat.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the oven from the wall outlet or switch off the dedicated breaker at your panel, then shut off the gas supply valve to the appliance.
  2. Remove the oven racks and lift out the oven-floor panel or burner cover to expose the bake igniter and burner assembly (broil igniter is usually visible at the top of the oven cavity).
  3. Disconnect the wire harness plug from the igniter leads, noting the orientation and inspecting the terminals for burn marks or corrosion.
  4. Remove the mounting screws or bracket that secures the igniter to the burner tube or oven wall (typically one or two screws hold a metal bracket over the ceramic body).
  5. Lift the old igniter straight out, taking care not to touch any burner ports or orifices, and compare it to your new part to confirm shape and lead length.
  6. Position the new igniter in the bracket or mounting hole, align it so the hot tip sits in front of the burner ports (not touching metal), and secure it with the original screws.
  7. Reconnect the wire harness, making sure the plug seats fully and the wires are routed clear of any sharp edges or hot surfaces.
  8. Replace the oven-floor panel and racks, then restore gas and electrical power.
  9. Run a test cycle on bake and broil, watching for the igniter to glow white-hot within 90 seconds and the burner to light within another 30 seconds, then verify even flame across the burner.

The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro

Gas appliance repair requires working near live gas lines and high-voltage ignition circuits. If you’re not confident shutting off gas, testing electrical components with a multimeter, or handling fragile ceramic igniters, hire a qualified appliance technician. Also call a pro if replacing the igniter does not restore ignition, since the gas valve, flame sensor, control board, or wiring harness may be at fault. Any smell of gas during diagnosis means you should stop work, leave the area, and contact your gas utility or a licensed service company immediately. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
