Electrolux Washer Won’t Agitate — What’s Happening

When your Electrolux washer won’t agitate, the machine fills with water and may drain or spin later, but the agitator or wash basket does not move clothes during the wash cycle. This means the wash action that tumbles and cleans the load is absent.

The symptom can appear suddenly or get worse over time. Common causes range from simple mechanical wear like a stripped agitator or worn drive block to safety lockouts from a faulty lid switch or door latch. Less often, a broken belt, failed motor coupling, low water level, or motor and control board issues stop agitation.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the washer is set to a normal wash cycle, not delay, soak, drain, or spin-only mode.
  2. Confirm the washer fills to the correct water level and check inlet screens and water pressure.
  3. Inspect the lid switch, door latch, and striker for damage or misalignment, and test continuity with a multimeter.
  4. Remove the agitator or top panel and check for worn splines, stripped dogs, or broken agitator components.
  5. Check the drive belt (belt-driven models) or motor coupling (direct-drive models) for cracks, wear, or looseness.
  6. With the agitator removed, run a short cycle and observe whether the agitator shaft or drive block turns.
  7. Test for voltage at the motor terminals during a wash cycle, then check the motor for free rotation and listen for hum or noise.
  8. If all mechanical parts and safety switches test good, inspect the timer or control board for burn marks or faulty outputs per the wiring diagram.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Agitator repair kitAmazon | Includes dogs, splines, and cam components for top-load agitators.
Lid switch or door latch assemblyAmazon | Match your exact model number for correct mounting and connector type.
Washer drive belt or motor couplingAmazon | Belt for belt-driven models, coupling for direct-drive designs.
Drive blockAmazon | Connects agitator to shaft on many top-load Electrolux washers.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you are not comfortable removing the agitator or cabinet panels, if you lack a multimeter to test switches and motor, or if the motor hums but does not spin and you cannot safely access or replace it. Also call for help if the agitator shaft does not turn with the agitator removed, since that points to a transmission or gearcase fault that requires special tools and part availability. Control board diagnosis and replacement is best left to a technician with the correct wiring diagram and test equipment.
