Electrolux Washer E23 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E23 means a drain pump drive-circuit fault. Most common fix: replace the drain pump or inspect wiring and control board connections.

Electrolux Washer E23 Error Code — What It Means

E23 on an Electrolux washer indicates a fault between the drain pump triac sensing and the triac status on the control board. This is an electrical problem in the circuit that drives the drain pump, not just a simple clog or slow-drain warning. The control has detected that it cannot properly communicate with or control the pump, which points to the pump itself, the wiring harness, the connectors, or the main control board (PCB).

While debris or a blockage can overload the pump and contribute to the fault, the code itself is typically treated as a drive-circuit issue rather than a pure drainage blockage. The most common causes are a failed or jammed drain pump, damaged or loose drain pump wiring or connectors, and a faulty main control board.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and wait two minutes to make sure all capacitors discharge and the control resets.
  2. Remove and clean the drain filter at the front lower corner of the machine, checking for coins, lint, or foreign objects that could jam the pump impeller.
  3. Inspect the drain hose from the pump to the standpipe or sink, looking for kinks, crushing, or installation above the recommended height, and verify the hose end is not submerged in standing water (which causes siphoning).
  4. Access the drain pump by removing the lower front panel or tipping the washer back, then manually spin the impeller and check for debris or binding.
  5. Test the pump electrically by disconnecting the pump harness connector, inspecting the pins for corrosion or damage, and using a multimeter to verify continuity across the pump motor terminals (if the pump is open or shorted, replace it).
  6. Inspect the pump wiring harness from the pump to the main control board, looking for loose connectors, broken wires, heat damage, or signs of arcing, and reseat all connections firmly.
  7. If the pump and wiring test good, the main control board is the likely fault, and you should consult a technician or replace the PCB if you have the model-specific replacement part number and are comfortable with board-level work.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Drain pumpAmazon | Match your model number. Most common failure point for E23.
Drain pump wiring harnessAmazon | If connectors or wires show heat damage or breaks.
Main control board (PCB)Amazon | Required if pump and wiring test good but fault persists.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are not comfortable working with electrical connectors and multimeters, if the fault persists after cleaning the filter and inspecting the hose, or if you need to replace the main control board. The E23 code requires diagnosis of the pump drive circuit, and incorrect handling of wiring or the PCB can create new faults or safety hazards. A technician will have the service manual, correct part numbers for your model, and the tools to test triac output and harness continuity reliably.
