Whirlpool Washer Won’t Spin — What’s Happening

A Whirlpool washer that won’t spin is a symptom, not a single fault code. The machine may stop before the spin cycle, spin slowly, or refuse to spin at all. Whirlpool washers are designed to suspend or skip spin if they detect an imbalance, excessive suds, a drain restriction, or a door/lid lock problem.

Depending on your model, you may see a code like F7 E1 (motor speed fault on some top-loaders), Sud or Sd (too many suds on front-loaders), or no code at all. If no code is displayed, the issue is treated as a spin-system failure and you’ll work through load, installation, drain, and mechanical causes in order.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the complaint by running a short spin-only cycle and note whether the machine spins at all, spins slowly, or stops during drain, and check the display for any error codes.
  2. Redistribute the load evenly around the basket, remove half the items if overloaded, and restart the cycle to see if the washer completes spin.
  3. Check that the washer is level on all four feet using a bubble level side-to-side and front-to-back, and adjust the leveling feet until the unit is stable and does not rock.
  4. Inspect the drain hose for kinks or pinches, verify the standpipe height is between 39 and 96 inches, and clean the drain pump filter or trap (if accessible) to remove lint and debris.
  5. Confirm the lid or door closes fully and the lock clicks or lights up, and test the latch and lock assembly by listening for the lock motor or checking continuity if the machine will not enter spin.
  6. Enter diagnostic mode using your model’s service procedure, retrieve any stored fault codes, and note the code number to guide further testing.
  7. Power off the washer for two minutes to clear temporary system errors, then power on and retry the cycle to see if the fault clears.
  8. For persistent no-spin with no code, inspect the drive belt (top-load) for wear or breakage, check the clutch and motor coupling for damage, and test the motor and rotor/stator (direct-drive models) for resistance and continuity per the tech sheet.

When to Call a Pro

Call a tech if the washer still won’t spin after you’ve corrected the load, leveling, and drain issues and cleared any temporary codes. Drive-system repairs like clutch, transmission, rotor, stator, motor control board, and pressure switch replacement require disassembly, special tools, and electrical testing. If you see a persistent F7 E1 or other motor-speed code after power-cycling, or if you hear grinding or no motor sound during spin attempts, professional diagnosis and parts replacement are the next step.
