Whirlpool Washer F02 Error Code — What It Means
F02 is a long drain error common on Whirlpool Duet front load washers. The machine could not empty the tub within the expected time. On many units a Sud warning shows first, then F02 follows a few minutes later.
Common Causes
- Clogged drain pump filter Debris in the coin trap blocks flow and is the most common cause of F02.
- Blocked or kinked drain hose A pinched or clogged hose stops water from leaving the tub.
- Excess suds Too much detergent or non HE detergent creates foam the pump cannot move.
- Weak or jammed drain pump A failing pump cannot push water out in time and trips the code.
- Loose pump connection A loose harness between the pump and control board breaks the drain circuit.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Unplug the washer before you open any panel or remove the filter.
- Remove the lower front service panel and set a pan and towel under the filter housing.
- Turn the filter counterclockwise, let residual water drain, and pull out all debris.
- Inspect the full length of the drain hose for kinks or clogs and clear them.
- Switch to HE detergent and limit it to about one tablespoon to stop suds buildup.
- Restore power and run a Rinse and Spin to confirm the tub empties.
- If it still fails, test the drain pump and its wiring, then replace the pump if defective.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Whirlpool Duet drain pump | Amazon | Confirm the part number against your model tag before ordering. |
| Washer drain hose | Amazon | Swap in a new hose if the old one is collapsed or clogged. |
| HE detergent | Amazon | A correct HE formula prevents the suds that retrigger F02. |
When to Call a Pro
If the filter, hose, and detergent are all correct and a new pump does not clear F02, the control board or wiring may be at fault. Bring in a technician if multimeter testing is outside your comfort zone.
