Whirlpool Washer F3E2 Error Code - Causes & Fix

2 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

F3E2 on a Whirlpool washer signals an inlet water temperature sensor fault. The most common fix is replacing the thermistor.

Whirlpool Washer F3E2 Error Code — What It Means

The F3E2 error code on Whirlpool washers (Cabrio and similar models) indicates a water temperature sensing fault in the inlet circuit. The control board has detected an out-of-range signal from the thermistor, which monitors incoming water temperature. This code appears when the sensor reads open, shorted, or outside normal operating values. The machine will not complete cycles until the fault is corrected. Note that F3E2 means something different on Whirlpool dryers (moisture sensor issue), so confirm you are diagnosing a washer before proceeding.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and shut off both hot and cold water supply valves to eliminate shock and flood risk during repair.
  2. Access the sensor area by removing the top panel or rear service cover, depending on your model, to reach the thermistor connector near the inlet valve or heater assembly.
  3. Disconnect the thermistor connector and use a multimeter set to resistance (ohms) to measure across the sensor terminals.
  4. Compare the reading to the specification range: a typical washer thermistor reads 9.8 kΩ to 14.8 kΩ at 86°F to 68°F. If the reading is out of range, open, or shorted (infinity or zero), replace the sensor.
  5. Inspect the wiring harness from the sensor to the control board for cuts, abrasion, or corroded connector pins. Repair or replace damaged wiring as needed.
  6. Replace the faulty component: install a new thermistor if the sensor failed, or replace the entire inlet valve assembly if the thermistor is built into the valve and the valve assembly tests bad.
  7. Reassemble the washer, restore power and water, and run a test cycle. Clear the error code if necessary by cycling the mode dial or unplugging for 60 seconds.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Washer thermistor / temperature sensorAmazon | Order by model number. Some units use a standalone sensor, others integrate it into the valve.
Water inlet valve assemblyAmazon | Required when the thermistor is built into the valve body and tests out of specification.
Main control boardAmazon | Only needed if the sensor and all wiring test good but the F3E2 fault returns after clearing.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working with multimeters, accessing internal components, or tracing wiring, call a qualified appliance technician. Also call a professional if you have replaced the sensor and inspected all wiring but the F3E2 code returns immediately, since main control board diagnosis and replacement require experience with washer electronics and proper part programming on some models.
