Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Unplug the washer for at least one minute to attempt a reset.
  2. Inspect the lid or door area and clear any clothing or object blocking the latch.
  3. Plug back in and run a cycle to see whether the lock engages.
  4. If the code returns, unplug again and disconnect the lid switch or lock from the board.
  5. Set a meter to ohms and test for continuity with the lid open and then closed.
  6. Inspect the wiring harness for frayed wires or corrosion and repair as needed.
  7. Replace the lid lock or door lock assembly with an OEM part matched to your model.

Parts Often Needed

Washer lid switchAmazon | Order by model number if continuity testing shows the switch has failed.
Front load door lock assemblyAmazon | Use the door lock matched to your front load model when F5E1 shows there.

When to Call a Pro

If the lock tests good and a new assembly does not clear F5E1, the control board may be the cause. Call a technician if you are not comfortable testing switches or replacing a control board.
