Whirlpool Washer Leaking Water — What’s Happening

A Whirlpool washer leaking water is a symptom, not a single fault code. Water can appear at the back near the hoses, underneath the machine, or at the front door during different parts of the cycle. The location and timing of the leak tell you whether the problem is in the water supply path, the drain system, or a seal.

Whirlpool identifies the most common sources as loose or damaged fill hoses, leaking inlet valves, clogged or kinked drain hoses, dirty or torn door seals on front-load models, clogged drain pump filters, oversudsing from too much detergent, and machines that are not level. If you also see an F8 E1 or Lo FL code, the washer is not detecting correct incoming water and you should check that both hot and cold supply valves are fully open and inlet screens are not clogged.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the washer and turn off both hot and cold water supply valves before you start any inspection.
  2. Note when and where the leak occurs (during fill, wash, drain, or spin, and whether it is at the back, underneath, or at the front door) to narrow down the source.
  3. Inspect both inlet hoses at the back for cracks, bulges, kinks, and loose connections, and check that the rubber washers inside each coupling are present and not damaged.
  4. Remove the inlet hoses and pull out the small mesh screens inside each inlet port on the washer, then clean or replace them if clogged with debris or mineral buildup.
  5. Check the drain hose for kinks, holes, blockage, and correct routing, and verify it is securely attached and not inserted more than about 4.5 inches into the standpipe or drain.
  6. Locate and inspect the drain pump filter (usually behind a small access panel at the front lower corner on front-load models), remove any debris, and look for cracks or water around the pump housing.
  7. On front-load washers, inspect the door gasket for tears, trapped objects, soap residue buildup, and proper seating around the door opening, and clean or replace the gasket as needed.
  8. Check that the washer is level front-to-back and side-to-side by adjusting the leveling legs, then run a supervised test cycle to confirm the leak is resolved.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Washing machine fill hose (pair with rubber washers)Amazon | Replace any cracked or restricted inlet hose and always use new rubber washers at each connection.
Water inlet valveAmazon | Required if water drips into the tub when the machine is off.
Front-load washer door boot seal / gasketAmazon | Needed if the rubber seal is torn or cannot be cleaned and reseated.
Drain pump assemblyAmazon | Replace if the pump housing is cracked or leaking and cleaning the filter does not stop the leak.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you cannot locate the leak source after inspecting hoses and seals, if the leak is coming from inside the cabinet where internal hoses or the tub seal are located, or if you are not comfortable removing panels or replacing the inlet valve or drain pump. A pro can also diagnose intermittent leaks that only appear under load during spin cycles or when internal components like the tub seal or internal hose clamps have failed.
