Samsung Washer Smells Like Mildew — What’s Happening

A mildew smell in your Samsung washer is not a fault code or electronic error. It’s an odor complaint that Samsung ties directly to trapped water, detergent buildup, and poor drainage. The smell comes from mold or bacteria growing in damp areas like the door gasket, detergent drawer, tub, or drain path.

Samsung’s fix centers on removing standing water, cleaning residue from key areas, and running the washer’s Self Clean cycle with liquid chlorine bleach. If the machine drains poorly or water sits in the tub after a cycle, the drain hose position or a clog is usually to blame.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm the complaint is odor only, not a control-board fault code or error message on the display.
  2. Check for visible standing water in the tub after the last cycle. If water remains, run a Spin-only cycle and watch for complete drainage.
  3. Inspect the drain hose routing and verify it inserts no more than eight inches into the standpipe or drain per Samsung spec.
  4. Pull out the detergent drawer completely and inspect the drawer and housing for soap buildup, mold, or slime. Clean both thoroughly with hot water.
  5. Peel back the door gasket folds on front-load models and wipe away any visible residue, mold, or standing water with a damp cloth.
  6. Run the washer’s Self Clean, Self Clean+, or Pure Cycle (depending on model). Pour liquid chlorine bleach into the detergent compartment only, not the bleach compartment, and let the cycle finish (about 1 hour for top-load, 4 hours for front-load).
  7. After Self Clean finishes, run a Rinse+Spin cycle until no suds or residue appear, then wipe the tub, gasket, and drawer dry.
  8. If odor persists and water still pools in the tub, inspect the drain filter (if accessible) and drain pump path for blockage or debris.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Door boot seal (door gasket)Amazon | Replace if the rubber is torn, permanently stained with mold, or won’t clean up after repeated washing.
Detergent drawer assemblyAmazon | Order a new drawer if the old one is cracked or buildup can’t be removed from the dispenser housing.
Drain hoseAmazon | Replace if kinked, cracked, or if repositioning doesn’t solve drainage problems.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If you’ve cleaned the gasket, drawer, and tub, repositioned the drain hose, and run Self Clean but the odor returns or water still won’t drain, call a tech. The drain pump, pump filter, or internal drain path may be clogged or failing. A technician can pull the pump, inspect the drain system, and verify the machine empties completely under all cycle conditions.
