⚡ Quick Answer

Erratic oven temps, undercooked food, or error codes mean your RTD sensor is bad. Replacing the oven temperature probe fixes inconsistent heating and restores accurate control.

Frigidaire Oven Temperature Sensor (RTD Probe) Replacement — What This Part Does

The oven temperature sensor (also called an RTD probe or sensor thermistor) sends a resistance signal to the control board so the oven knows the actual cavity temperature and can cycle the heating elements correctly. Frigidaire uses this sensor for precise temperature regulation during baking and roasting.

The sensor fails when the internal resistance element degrades, gets contaminated, or breaks open. Damaged wiring, corroded connectors, and poor splice joints also cause temperature-sensing circuit problems. When the sensor reads out of range or intermittent, the control can’t regulate heat properly and you get inconsistent cooking performance or error codes.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker and the gas shutoff valve if you have a gas model.
  2. Pull the range forward away from the wall so you can access the rear panel.
  3. Remove the screws holding the rear access panel and lift it off to expose the back of the oven cavity and wiring.
  4. Locate the temperature sensor probe (a metal tube sticking through the rear oven wall) and follow its lead to the wire connector.
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector from the oven harness and use a multimeter set to ohms to measure resistance across the sensor terminals (expect approximately 540 ohms at room temperature for many Frigidaire models, though some read around 1,080 ohms).
  6. If the reading is way off or open, unscrew the single retaining screw or bracket holding the sensor to the oven wall and gently pull the probe out of the mounting hole.
  7. Insert the new OEM sensor probe through the same hole from the back, secure it with the retaining screw, and route the lead so it won’t pinch when you reinstall the panel.
  8. Reconnect the sensor plug to the oven harness (some replacement sensors require you to cut the old connector off and splice it onto the new sensor leads using butt connectors, so match wire colors carefully).
  9. Reinstall the rear panel, push the range back into place, restore power and gas, run a test bake cycle at 350°F for 20 minutes, and verify the oven holds temperature without error codes.

The Part You Need

PartNotes
Frigidaire oven temperature sensor (RTD probe)Amazon | Common OEM part numbers include 316490003, 316490001, 5304526310, and 316490000. Check the model and serial plate on the front frame inside the oven door or along the top/side trim to find your exact range model, then cross-reference the correct sensor for your unit on the Frigidaire parts site or with your parts supplier. Some sensors come with a new connector pigtail and require splicing to the existing harness.

When to Call a Pro

If you measure the sensor and it reads correct resistance at room temperature but the oven still won’t regulate temperature or posts error codes, the control board or wiring harness may be at fault and a technician with a wiring diagram and board-level diagnostics is your next step. On gas ranges, if you smell gas during testing or are not confident working near gas connections, call a pro to handle the repair and perform a leak check. If the sensor replacement requires cutting and splicing wires and you’re not comfortable with electrical connections, a service tech can install the new probe and make sure the splice is solid and insulated. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
