Frigidaire Oven Door Lock Motor & Switch Assembly Replacement — What This Part Does

The door lock latch motor and switch assembly is a safety device that automatically locks the oven door during the self-clean cycle. The motor drives a latch rod to engage or disengage the door lock, and the built-in switch tells the control board whether the door is locked or unlocked. When this assembly fails, the control cannot verify latch position or move the latch, so the door may stay stuck closed after cleaning or the oven may refuse to start the self-clean cycle.

Common failure causes include a burned-out latch motor, worn internal gears or actuator inside the assembly, failed switch contacts that no longer send correct position signals to the control, and binding or misalignment in the latch rod or linkage. Loose or corroded wiring at the motor and switch terminals can also prevent proper operation. Because the motor and switch are integrated into one assembly, the entire unit is replaced rather than repaired.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Disconnect power to the range at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit, and if you have a gas range turn off the gas supply valve before working behind the appliance.
  2. Pull the range away from the wall to access the rear panel, then remove the lower rear access panel by unscrewing the sheet-metal screws around its perimeter.
  3. Locate the door lock latch motor and switch assembly mounted near the center or side of the rear frame, with a connecting rod running forward to the door latch.
  4. Take a clear photo of the wire harness connections and the orientation of the latch rod before you disconnect anything.
  5. Unplug the wire harness from the motor and switch terminals, then remove the mounting screws that secure the assembly to the frame bracket.
  6. Tilt or slide the assembly to release the latch rod from its keeper or clip on the motor arm, and carefully pull the assembly free.
  7. Install the new latch motor and switch assembly in the reverse order, reconnecting the latch rod first and then threading in the mounting screws finger-tight before final tightening.
  8. Reconnect the wire harness exactly as shown in your reference photo, checking that each terminal is fully seated and corrosion-free.
  9. Reinstall the rear access panel, restore gas and electrical power, then test the door lock function by starting and canceling a self-clean cycle to confirm the latch engages and releases smoothly.

When to Call a Pro

Call a qualified appliance technician if you are uncomfortable working with live electrical connections or pulling a gas range away from the wall and disconnecting the gas supply. A pro can also diagnose whether the issue is the latch assembly, the control board that drives it, or binding in the door hinge and latch linkage that needs mechanical adjustment. On dual-fuel or slide-in ranges with complex rear cabinetry access, professional disassembly is often the safest route. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
