Frigidaire Oven Broil Element Replacement — What This Part Does
The broil element is the upper oven heating element that delivers direct heat from the top of the oven cavity when you select the broil function. It converts electrical current into radiant heat to brown, char, or finish food under high, focused heat.
The element fails when the internal heating coil develops breaks, blisters, or loses electrical continuity due to thermal cycling and age. Loose or burned terminal connections can also interrupt power delivery and stop the element from heating.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Broil function produces no heat You turn the oven to broil but the upper element never glows red or warms up.
- Visible breaks or blistering on the element You see physical cracks, separation, or bubbled metal along the element loops.
- Burned or loose element terminals The wire connectors on the element show charring, discoloration, or wiggle freely.
- Element glows only in sections Part of the element heats up but other loops or sections stay dark and cold.
- Multimeter shows no continuity across element terminals Testing the element on the ohms setting reads open or infinite resistance instead of a continuous path.
- Broil takes much longer than normal The element barely warms and food never browns, even after extended run time.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the range from the wall outlet or shut off the dedicated breaker at your electrical panel.
- Remove all oven racks to access the broil element at the top of the oven cavity.
- Locate the element mounting screws or support brackets at the front or sides of the element and remove them.
- Pull the element forward gently to expose the two wire terminals protruding through the rear oven wall.
- Remove the rear access panel of the range (if required on your model) to reach the element terminals and wire connectors from behind.
- Disconnect the two wire terminals or push-on connectors from the element terminals and pull the old element out of the oven.
- Insert the new broil element through the rear wall opening and reconnect the two wires to the element terminals in the same positions.
- Secure the element with the original mounting screws or brackets and reinstall the rear access panel and oven racks.
- Restore power to the range and test the broil function to verify the element glows red and produces even heat.

When to Call a Pro
Call a pro if you are not comfortable working with 240V appliance wiring or if your model requires removing extensive rear insulation or multiple access panels to reach the element terminals. Also call a tech if the new element still does not heat after installation, since the fault may be upstream in the wiring, control board, or a blown internal fuse that requires circuit tracing and component-level diagnosis. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
