Whirlpool Washer Water-Level Pressure Switch Replacement — What This Part Does

The water-level pressure switch or sensor tells the control board how much water is in the tub. On many Whirlpool top-load washers, this is a mechanical pressure switch connected to the tub by an air tube. When water fills the tub, air pressure in the tube rises and pushes a diaphragm inside the switch, signaling the board to stop the fill valve. Some newer models use an electronic pressure sensor mounted directly on the control board instead of a separate switch.

The switch or sensor fails when the diaphragm tears, contacts corrode, or the electronic sensor chip degrades. The air tube can crack, come loose, or get clogged with detergent residue or lint, blocking the pressure signal. When the control board stops receiving a valid water-level signal, it may overfill the tub, stop filling too soon, refuse to fill at all, or trigger a continuous drain cycle depending on the failure mode and model design.

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and turn off both hot and cold water supply valves behind the machine.
  2. Locate your washer’s model and serial number on the tag inside the door rim or on the back panel, then look up the correct pressure switch or sensor part number for your exact model.
  3. Remove the control knobs or unscrew the control panel to access the pressure switch on top-load models, or remove the top panel and cabinet side to reach the switch mounted on the frame.
  4. Inspect the air tube running from the tub air dome to the pressure switch for cracks, kinks, disconnection, or blockage, and check that both ends are firmly seated.
  5. Disconnect the wire harness plug from the pressure switch and examine the terminals for corrosion or damage, then clean or repair the connector if needed.
  6. Release the air tube clamp with pliers, pull the tube off the switch nipple, then rotate or unlock the switch body from its mounting bracket and lift it out.
  7. Install the new pressure switch by snapping or rotating it into the bracket, push the air tube firmly onto the nipple, secure the clamp, and plug in the wire harness.
  8. Reassemble the control panel or cabinet panels, restore power and water supply, then run a small test load and watch the fill cycle to confirm the washer stops at the correct water level.
  9. If your model uses an electronic pressure sensor soldered to the control board, you will need to remove the board, desolder the old sensor chip, solder in the new sensor, and reinstall the board before testing.

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working inside the control panel or cabinet, or if your washer uses an electronic pressure sensor soldered to the control board, call a technician. Desoldering and soldering tiny surface-mount sensors requires specialty tools and experience. Also call a pro if replacing the switch and inspecting the air tube does not fix the fill problem, because the issue may be a failed control board, wiring harness short, or a clogged tub air dome that requires disassembly of the outer tub to clear.
