Whirlpool Dryer Won't Stop - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

Most often caused by a stuck control board relay or restricted airflow. Check for AF/F4E3 code, power reset the dryer, and inspect the vent.

Whirlpool Dryer Won’t Stop — What’s Happening

A Whirlpool dryer that won’t stop usually means the drum keeps tumbling past the expected end of the cycle, or the machine will not respond when you press Cancel or Stop. This is not an official Whirlpool fault code by itself. Instead, it describes a control problem where the dryer never shuts off unless you open the door or pull the plug.

Sometimes the dryer appears to run forever because it cannot sense that clothes are dry. In that case the underlying issue is often restricted airflow, which Whirlpool flags with code AF or F4E3. Other times the timer or control board relay sticks closed and the drum simply will not stop on command. Whirlpool’s published code list does not include a dedicated “won’t stop” code, so diagnosis focuses on the control board, timer contacts, airflow restrictions, and electrical supply.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Confirm exactly what is happening: note whether the drum is continuously tumbling, whether the timer or countdown is advancing, and whether pressing Cancel/Stop or opening the door changes anything.
  2. Check the display for a fault code. If you see AF or F4E3, pull and clean the lint screen, inspect the entire exhaust duct for kinks or crushing, and verify the outdoor vent cap opens freely. Touch any key to clear the code after you fix the restriction.
  3. Perform a full power reset by unplugging the dryer for two minutes, then restore power and attempt a new cycle. Whirlpool says PF can be cleared by touching and holding Start or pressing Power to clear the display.
  4. On electric dryers, verify that both 120 V legs are present at the outlet. Whirlpool notes L2 for low or no line voltage and instructs you to check household fuses, breakers, and the power cord installation. Consult a qualified electrician if voltage is missing.
  5. If the dryer still will not stop and no code is displayed, unplug the machine and inspect the control board for visible relay damage, burnt traces, or scorch marks.
  6. Test the door switch with a multimeter for continuity when closed and open circuit when the door is open. Replace the switch if it stays closed regardless of door position.
  7. If all checks pass and the symptom returns immediately after reset, replace the electronic control board or mechanical timer. The control relay is the most common internal fault when a dryer will not stop on command.
  8. After any repair, run a short timed-dry cycle and verify that the dryer stops when the timer reaches zero and when you press Cancel.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Electronic control boardAmazon | Match the part number printed on your original board; this is the most common fix for a dryer that will not stop.
Mechanical cycle timerAmazon | For older dial-control models; verify your model uses a timer rather than electronic controls.
User interface boardAmazon | Order if button presses are ignored and the control board tests good.
Door switchAmazon | Inexpensive and quick to replace if continuity testing shows it is stuck closed.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are uncomfortable working with 240 V electric dryer circuits, if you cannot safely access the control board inside the console, or if the fault returns after you have cleaned the vent and replaced the control board. A qualified service tech can perform live voltage tests, confirm that all safety interlocks are working, and source the correct Whirlpool control board for your specific model. Professional diagnosis is also recommended if you see multiple fault codes cycling on the display or if the dryer exhibits other erratic behavior such as intermittent heating or random pauses.
