Whirlpool Dryer Loud Banging — What’s Happening

A loud banging or thumping noise in a Whirlpool dryer is not an error code. It is a symptom that something is hitting the drum or cabinet repeatedly during operation. This is a mechanical problem, not an electronic control fault.

If the noise sounds like a knock or rattle, loose items in clothing or the cabinet are a common cause. If it is a thump or pounding that repeats as the drum turns, drum support components like rollers or glides are more likely worn or failing.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the dryer before any inspection or repair work.
  2. Inspect the drum interior for coins, buttons, zippers, or other loose objects that may be striking the drum.
  3. Check the lint filter opening and blower housing for trapped debris or foreign objects.
  4. Remove the front or rear access panels (depending on model) to inspect drum rollers, glides, belt, idler pulley, and blower wheel.
  5. Spin the drum by hand and listen or feel for roughness, binding, or thumping that indicates worn rollers or glides.
  6. Inspect the drum support rollers and their axles for flat spots, cracking, wobble, or misalignment, and check the idler pulley for wear or noise.
  7. Check the blower wheel for obstructions, wobble, or a loose mounting, and replace if it wobbles or is damaged.
  8. Verify the dryer is level by checking all four leveling legs and adjust as needed to reduce vibration.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable disassembling the dryer cabinet or working around moving parts. If you have replaced rollers, glides, and the idler pulley and the banging persists, internal motor or drum mounting issues may require professional diagnosis. Also call a pro if the blower wheel is difficult to access or if reassembly of panels and belt routing is unclear after your inspection.
