⚡ Quick Answer

F01 signals a control board or electronic fault. Most often caused by failed solder joints or a bad relay on the main control board.

Most likely failed control board components, especially cracked solder joints or a failed relay (the most common cause)

Whirlpool Dryer F01 Error Code — What It Means

The F01 error code on a Whirlpool dryer indicates a control or electronic system failure. It is not related to airflow, venting, or heating issues. The code appears when the main control board detects a fault in its own circuitry or communication pathways. Whirlpool’s official support recommends a power reset as the first troubleshooting step, which points to the electronic nature of the fault.

Independent repair sources and field technicians consistently identify F01 as a main control board problem. The control board is the computer that runs the dryer’s cycles, and when its internal components fail or connections degrade, the board flags itself with F01. This code typically requires inspection and repair or replacement of electronic components rather than user-serviceable parts like sensors or switches.

Before You Replace Anything

Homeowners sometimes replace door switches, thermistors, or thermal fuses hoping to clear F01, but those parts rarely cause this code. Visually inspect the control board for burned spots, cracked solder joints, or a damaged relay before ordering any parts.

Common Causes

Quick Diagnosis

Answer these to narrow it down fast.

Does the dryer respond at all when you press buttons, or is the display completely dead?
Yes: The control board is receiving power. Proceed with the reset procedure and then inspect the board and connections.
No: Check the circuit breaker and verify 240 V at the outlet. If power is present but the display is dead, the control board may have failed completely.
After a 5-minute power reset, does F01 return immediately when you start a cycle?
Yes: The fault is persistent. Open the control panel and visually inspect the board for burn marks, cracked solder, or a damaged relay.
No: The fault may have been a transient glitch. Monitor the dryer over several cycles to confirm the code is cleared.
Can you see any burned components, cracked solder joints, or a visibly damaged relay on the control board?
Yes: The board has physical damage. A technician can attempt re-soldering or relay replacement, or replace the entire board if damage is widespread.
No: Check all wiring connectors on the board for looseness or corrosion, then test related components like the door switch and thermistor with a multimeter.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Turn off power at the circuit breaker for at least five minutes to allow the control board to fully reset and discharge any residual charge.
  2. Restore power and run a short timed dry cycle to see if F01 reappears. If the code does not return, the fault may have been a transient glitch.
  3. Unplug the dryer and remove the top or front panel to access the main control board, usually located behind the console or on the front panel.
  4. Visually inspect the control board for burn marks, discolored areas, cracked solder joints around component pins, or a damaged relay. Use a flashlight and magnifying glass if needed.
  5. Check all wiring connectors on the control board. Firmly press each connector to make sure it is fully seated, and look for corroded or bent pins.
  6. Test related components with a multimeter if the board appears intact. Check the door switch for continuity when the door is closed, and verify the thermistor and thermal fuse are not open.
  7. Replace or repair the control board if you found visible damage or if all connections and downstream components tested good. Reassemble the dryer and run a full cycle to confirm F01 does not return.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Main control board (electronic control)Amazon | Match the part number on your existing board or use your dryer’s model number to find the correct replacement.
Wiring harness or connector kitAmazon | Order if you find cracked or melted connectors during inspection.

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working with 240-volt appliances or disassembling the control panel. F01 often requires board-level diagnosis, including inspecting solder joints under magnification and testing continuity on small circuit traces. If the board shows physical damage, a technician can assess whether targeted repair (re-soldering a joint or replacing a relay) is feasible or whether full board replacement is the safer choice. Professional service also includes verifying that downstream components are not sending fault signals and confirming the dryer operates correctly after repair.

Rough cost: A pro service call runs about $150–350 for control board replacement and service call.
