Maytag Refrigerator Water Leaking on Floor — What’s Happening

Water on the floor under a Maytag refrigerator is not an error code. It is a symptom that typically points to a blockage in the defrost system or a leak in the fresh-water supply. When the defrost drain in the freezer becomes clogged with ice or debris, meltwater from the evaporator coil backs up and overflows into the cabinet, eventually reaching the floor. If the leak comes from the water supply side, you will see water tracking from connections at the back of the unit, the filter housing, or the household supply valve.

Maytag’s own troubleshooting for bottom-freezer models tells you to check the household water supply line, all fittings and connections, the saddle or shut-off valve, the water filter and its O-rings, and the filter housing for cracks or deterioration from water impurities. The filter should be replaced every six months or as indicated. Because the symptom can stem from either the defrost system or the fresh-water system, you need to trace the water source before replacing parts.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Unplug the refrigerator and determine whether water is coming from the fresh-water system or the defrost system by checking for wet tracks inside the cabinet, water under crispers, or pooling near the back wall.
  2. Inspect the household water supply line, all fittings at the shut-off valve, and the connection at the rear of the refrigerator for cracks, kinks, or loose push-fit couplings.
  3. Remove the water filter and examine it for cracks, verify both O-rings are present and intact, and inspect the filter housing for splits or deterioration from mineral buildup.
  4. Remove the rear freezer evaporator cover panel to access the drain hole under the evaporator coil, clear any visible debris or ice, and thaw the area with controlled heat if frozen.
  5. Flush the defrost drain with hot water from a turkey baster or squeeze bottle until water flows freely into the drain pan under the refrigerator.
  6. Pull the refrigerator forward and remove the drain pan from underneath, then inspect the pan for cracks and check that it is not overflowing.
  7. If equipped with a drain tube or check valve between the evaporator and the pan, disconnect and clean or replace the tube if clogged with debris or mineral deposits.
  8. Replace the water filter every six months or as indicated by the filter-change light, and confirm all supply fittings are fully seated and hand-tight before restoring power.

Defrost drain panAmazon | Located under the refrigerator; replace if cracked.
Defrost drain tube or check valveAmazon | Clean or replace if clogged with food particles or mineral scale.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a pro if you cannot access the evaporator cover panel or drain area safely, if flushing the drain does not stop water from pooling inside the cabinet, or if you see active leaks at the inlet valve or internal tubing that require refrigerator disassembly. A technician can also diagnose less common causes such as a failing evaporator fan that alters frost patterns or a restricted capillary tube in the defrost system.
