Maytag Refrigerator Light Not Working — What’s Happening

A Maytag refrigerator light that won’t turn on is not a fault code problem. It’s a component issue involving the LED light assembly or bulb, the door switch that signals the light to turn on, the wiring harness under the top hinge, or the control board. The interior light is controlled by the door switch, and on many newer models the light will also shut off automatically after the doors have been open for 10 minutes. Closing all doors resets this timeout.

Most cases trace back to a burned-out LED module, a door switch that isn’t being pressed when the door closes, or a loose wiring connector at the top hinge after the unit was moved or the doors were removed. If both the refrigerator and freezer compartment lights are out at the same time, the control board becomes a stronger suspect because door switches signal the board to turn the lights on and off.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Close all doors and wait 30 seconds to clear the automatic 10-minute timeout condition, then reopen the door and check if the light comes back on.
  2. Inspect the door switch to verify it is physically being pressed when the door closes and released when the door opens.
  3. Check that the refrigerator is level and the doors are aligned properly so the door switch makes full contact when closed.
  4. Unplug the refrigerator and remove the top hinge cover to inspect the wiring harness connector for a loose or unplugged connection.
  5. On models with a replaceable bulb, tighten the bulb in the socket and replace it with an appliance bulb of the same size, shape, and wattage (40 watts maximum) if it is burned out.
  6. On LED models, check the LED module connection and replace the entire LED assembly if the module is dark or flickering.
  7. Inspect the light socket on bulb-based models for discoloration, loose wires, or cracks, and replace the socket if damaged.
  8. If both refrigerator and freezer lights are out and all wiring and switch checks pass, test the control board or have a technician evaluate it for replacement.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
LED light assembly or moduleAmazon | Replaced as a unit on newer Maytag models with LED lighting
Appliance light bulbAmazon | 40 watts maximum, same size and shape as original on bulb-based models
Refrigerator door switchAmazon | Signals the control board to turn lights on and off
Main control boardAmazon | Consider if both compartment lights are out and other checks pass

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you’ve replaced the LED assembly or bulb and checked the door switch and wiring but the light still won’t turn on. Also call for help if both the refrigerator and freezer compartment lights are out at the same time and you’re not comfortable testing the control board. A pro can trace the wiring harness, test switch continuity, and verify whether the control board is sending power to the light circuit.
