Generac Error Code 1200 — Overcrank Fix

What it means: The generator attempted to start but the Evolution controller never detected successful engine run after the programmed crank cycle (typically 3 crank attempts of 15 seconds each with a 7-second rest between). The controller then locks out with error 1200.

Overcrank is a catch-all that covers fuel, spark, compression, battery, and starter problems. The fix is systematic elimination.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check the Battery First

Generac generators need a strong battery. Under crank, battery voltage must stay above 10.5V. A battery that reads 12.5V at rest but drops below 10V under crank cannot start the engine. Test: connect a multimeter to the battery terminals and watch the voltage during a crank cycle. Below 10.5V = replace battery (Group 26 or U1 depending on model).

The battery charger board (0E7346) should output 13.2–13.8V at the battery terminals when the generator is in standby. Low charger output gradually kills batteries.

2. Verify Fuel Supply

For natural gas units: confirm the gas supply valve is fully open. Have a manometer at the generator fuel connection — need 7”–14” WC for natural gas, 11”–14” WC for LP. Many “overcrank” calls are caused by gas valves partially closed after landscaping or construction work.

For LP units: check the tank level. At temperatures below freezing, LP pressure drops significantly. A tank below 30% on a cold day may not have enough vapor pressure to run the generator.

3. Check the Spark

Remove the spark plug boot, pull the plug, reconnect the boot and hold the plug thread against the engine block with insulated pliers. Crank the engine. You should see a strong blue spark jumping the gap. A weak or yellow spark points to a failed ignition module or kill wire short to ground.

Generac spark plugs: Champion RC12YC (gapped 0.030”) for most single-cylinder engines. Replace annually.

4. Inspect the Stepper Motor (Throttle Actuator)

The stepper motor controls the choke plate on cold engines and the throttle plate during normal operation. Watch the throttle linkage during crank — it should move to the full-choke (closed) position for cold starts, then open as the engine fires. A stuck or failed stepper motor (0E6728) won’t move the throttle, causing no-start.

Test: disconnect the stepper motor connector. Measure resistance between pins — typically 50–100 ohms per coil. An open winding means replacement.

5. Test the Fuel Solenoid

On gas/LP generators, a fuel solenoid (0G7711) opens to allow gas flow when the controller commands start. Test: you should hear an audible click when the controller energizes the solenoid during crank. No click = bad solenoid or no control signal. Test with a multimeter on the solenoid wires — you should see 12V DC during crank.

6. Check for Tripped Safety Shutdown

The low oil pressure switch will prevent cranking if it’s already triggered or if the controller sees an open circuit. Some Generac models have a high temperature switch that also prevents starting after an overheat event. Reset: allow the generator to cool, check oil level, then clear the code by pressing Enter on the controller and selecting “Clear Active Alarms.”
