Generac Error Code 1900 — RPM Sense Loss

What it means: The Evolution controller has lost the engine speed signal from the magnetic pickup (mag pickup) sensor during generator operation. This is the single most common Generac error code across Guardian, CorePower, EcoGen, and Protector series.

The controller needs a continuous RPM signal to verify the engine is running and at the correct speed. When that signal drops out for more than a few seconds, the controller commands an immediate shutdown with error 1900. The generator will crank but not stay running, or will start and die within 30 seconds.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check the Mag Pickup Gap

The magnetic pickup sensor is mounted on the engine bell housing or flywheel cover, threaded into a bracket with a lock nut. It should be gapped 0.040” (one thickness of a business card) to 0.060” from the flywheel ring gear teeth.

Turn the generator off and disconnect the battery ground. Remove the access panel to reach the mag pickup. Back off the lock nut and turn the sensor clockwise (toward the flywheel) until it contacts the flywheel teeth. Then back it out 3/4 turn and tighten the lock nut. This sets the correct ~0.045” gap.

2. Test the Mag Pickup Resistance

Disconnect the two-wire connector at the mag pickup. Set your multimeter to ohms (2000 ohm scale). Measure across the two pins. A good mag pickup reads 200–600 ohms. An open circuit (OL) means a failed sensor — it needs replacement. A shorted reading (near 0 ohms) also means replacement.

Generac replacement sensors: 0G5885 ($35) or 0J8499 ($25) from most Generac parts suppliers.

3. Inspect Wiring to the Controller

The mag pickup wires run from the sensor to the 8-pin or 12-pin connector at the Evolution controller. On many Generac units, the harness rubs against the engine shroud near the alternator end bracket. Look for chafed or bare wires. Repair with heat-shrink butt connectors if the insulation is damaged.

4. Check AC Voltage Output from the Sensor

With the generator running (or cranking), set your multimeter to AC volts (200V scale). Connect across the two mag pickup wires at the controller connector. At cranking speed, you should see 1–5 VAC. At running speed, 10–30 VAC. If voltage is <1 VAC at crank, the sensor gap is wrong or the sensor is bad.

5. Check Controller Connector

Unplug the 8-pin or 12-pin connector at the Evolution controller. Inspect for bent, corroded, or pushed-back pins. Apply dielectric grease to the terminals before reconnecting. A poor connection at the controller is a common intermittent 1900 fault — it works when cold and fails after the engine heat expands the connector.
