What it means: The Evolution controller detected engine RPM exceeding the maximum safe threshold (typically 3750 RPM on a 3600 RPM generator, or 1950 RPM on 1800 RPM units). The controller immediately de-energizes the fuel solenoid and closes the throttle to prevent engine damage.

The stepper motor (0E6728) connects to the throttle plate via a small linkage arm. This arm should move freely through its full range. Remove the linkage and check for binding at the throttle pivot. If the throttle plate itself is sticking, spray carburetor cleaner on the pivot shaft and work it free.
WARNING: A binding linkage can cause overspeed because the stepper motor tries to close the throttle but the binding linkage keeps it partially open. The controller sees RPM rising but can’t bring it down.
2. Inspect Governor Springs
Older Generac units (pre-2010) use mechanical governor springs. A broken, stretched, or disconnected spring will cause the engine to overspeed because there’s no counter-tension on the governor arm. Replace springs as a set — they cost about $15 and are generac-specific.
