Frigidaire Washer Overflowing — What’s Happening
When a Frigidaire washer overflows, you’re dealing with one of two problems. If you see suds spilling out of the cabinet, Frigidaire labels this fault F2, which means too much detergent or the wrong type was used. The suds build up and push out of the tub during the cycle.
If the machine is actually overfilling with water, the fill control path has failed. The washer uses a pressure switch and air tube to sense when the tub is full and signal the water inlet valve to shut off. When any part of that system breaks down, water keeps entering past the correct level and can overflow the tub.
Most Likely Causes
- Water inlet valve stuck open or leaking internally The valve fails to close fully and allows water to enter even when the washer is unplugged or off.
- Faulty pressure switch or water level switch The switch does not detect tub pressure correctly and never tells the control board to stop filling.
- Clogged, kinked, cut, or disconnected pressure tube The air hose running from the tub to the pressure switch is blocked or damaged, so the switch can’t sense water level.
- Too much detergent or non-HE detergent Excess suds from overdosing or using regular detergent in an HE machine push out of the cabinet and look like an overflow.
- Control board output fault The main board continues to send power to the inlet valve when it should have stopped, though this is less common than valve or switch failures.
- Low household water pressure below 20 psi Insufficient supply pressure can prevent the inlet valve from seating and shutting off cleanly during fill.
How to Diagnose and Fix
- Confirm whether you see suds spilling out or actual water overflowing, since suds overflow is a detergent problem and water overflow is mechanical.
- If suds are the issue, switch to HE detergent, reduce the amount per load, and run an empty Quick Wash cycle to clear residual soap from the tub.
- If water is overfilling, unplug the washer during a fill cycle and watch whether water still enters the tub.
- If water continues to flow with power removed, replace the water inlet valve because it is stuck open or leaking internally.
- If water stops when unplugged, pull the cabinet and locate the pressure tube running from the outer tub to the pressure switch.
- Inspect the pressure tube for kinks, cracks, cuts, blockage, or disconnection and clean or replace it as needed.
- Test the pressure switch by blowing gently into the tube while listening for audible clicks, or replace the switch if the tube is clear and the washer still overfills.
- Check the main control board for burned traces or shorted relay outputs only if the valve and switch have both been confirmed good and the board is still energizing the valve incorrectly.
Parts You Might Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Water inlet valve | Amazon | Dual or single solenoid depending on model, requires at least 20 psi supply pressure to close properly. |
| Pressure switch or water level switch | Amazon | Senses air pressure in the tub via the pressure tube and signals the board to stop fill. |
| Pressure tube or air hose | Amazon | Clear vinyl or rubber tube connecting the outer tub to the pressure switch. |

When to Call a Pro
Call a tech if you’ve corrected detergent use and the washer still overflows, or if unplugging the machine does not stop water flow and you’re not comfortable replacing the inlet valve. Pressure switch diagnosis requires cabinet disassembly and some pressure testing, and control board work involves live voltage checks that are safer left to a qualified technician. If your household water pressure is below 20 psi, a plumber may need to address the supply side before any washer repair will hold.
