DuroMax Generator Error Codes
DuroMax portable generators (XP series, RS series) use a simple LED indicator system. The newer CO alert models have a dedicated carbon monoxide shutdown system. Unlike standby generators, DuroMax units don’t have a digital controller — diagnostics are pattern-based.
DuroMax LED Indicator Codes
| Indicator | Condition | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green LED | Normal | Generator is running and producing power | None |
| Red LED solid | Overload | Load exceeds rated output | Reduce load, reset breaker |
| Red LED flashing (XP models) | Low oil shutdown | Oil below safe level | Add SAE 10W-30 oil |
| No LED but engine runs | No AC output | Loss of residual magnetism or AVR failure | Flash field or replace AVR |
| CO Alert LED (2019+ models) | CO sensor triggered | High CO detected | Move to fresh air |
DuroMax Common Faults by Symptom
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Engine won’t start | Low oil or stale fuel | Check oil, drain fuel, clean carb |
| Starts then dies immediately | Low oil shutdown | Add oil to full mark |
| Runs but no power | Lost residual magnetism | Flash field with 12V battery (2-3 sec) |
| Runs but low power | AVR failure or engine speed low | Test AVR, adjust throttle linkage |
| Surges under load | Carburetor restriction | Clean carburetor jets, add fuel stabilizer |
| Overload light with no load | Shorted outlet or winding | Check GFCI outlet, test winding resistance |
| CO Alert won’t reset | Sensor fault | See specific CO reset procedure below |
Most Common DuroMax Faults
No AC Output (Loss of Residual Magnetism)
This is the most common DuroMax service call by a wide margin. The generator sits in a garage or shed for 8 months, someone drags it out during a power outage, the engine fires up, but nothing comes out of the outlets. The rotor has lost its residual magnetic field.
The field fix takes 30 seconds: with the generator stopped, connect a 12V battery charger or battery to the brush holder terminals for 2-3 seconds (positive to positive, negative to negative). Restart the generator — power should return. On brushless models, use an electric drill: spin the drill in reverse near the alternator while the generator is running to induce a magnetic field.
Low Oil Shutdown
DuroMax generators have a low oil sensor that kills the engine. The red LED flashes when active. The sensor is sensitive — even slightly low oil will trigger it. Check oil with the generator on a level surface. Use SAE 10W-30. After adding oil, cycle the engine switch to OFF then ON to clear the fault.
CO Alert Activation (2019+ Models)
Newer DuroMax generators have a built-in CO sensor. If it detects high CO levels, the generator shuts down and won’t restart until moved to fresh air. After moving to a well-ventilated outdoor area, press the CO Alert RESET button on the control panel. If the CO Alert LED stays on after moving to fresh air, the sensor module has failed and needs replacement.
