Most Common Westinghouse Generator Faults
Low Oil Shutdown
The most common Westinghouse issue. The low oil sensor kills the engine to prevent damage. Check oil level with the generator on a level surface. Add SAE 10W-30 to the full mark. Some models require manually cycling the switch to OFF then ON to clear the fault after adding oil.
No AC Output (Loss of Residual Magnetism)
Westinghouse generators that sit unused for months frequently lose residual magnetism in the rotor. The engine runs but there’s no power at the outlets. Zero-cost fix: with the generator stopped, connect a 12V battery to the brush terminals (positive to positive, negative to negative) for 2-3 seconds. Restart the generator — it should now produce power. An electric drill can also flash the field: spin the drill in reverse near the running generator to induce a magnetic field.
Overload Protection
Westinghouse generators have thermal breakers that trip when load exceeds rated wattage. The red overload LED illuminates. Reduce connected loads and push the breaker reset button. Do not repeatedly reset at high load — this damages the alternator winding.
