Champion Generator Error Codes

Champion Power Equipment generators use a simple LED indicator system on most portable models. The CO Shield system (on newer models) has its own dedicated indicator. Standby generators with digital controllers have a more detailed fault code display.

Most Common Champion Generator Faults

Overload Protection

Champion generators have a thermal overload breaker. When the load exceeds the generator’s rated wattage, the breaker trips and the red overload light illuminates. Reduce the connected load and push the circuit breaker reset button. Do not repeatedly reset without reducing load — this damages the winding insulation.

CO Shield Activation

Newer Champion generators include CO Shield technology that automatically shuts down the generator if CO levels become dangerous. The generator will not restart until it’s moved to fresh air. After moving to a well-ventilated area, press the CO Shield reset button or cycle the ignition switch. Champion warns: do not block the CO Shield sensor with mud, debris, or accessories.

Low Oil Shutdown

Champion generators have a low oil sensor that stops the engine if oil level drops below safe operating level. The red LED flashes when this fault is active. Add oil (SAE 10W-30 recommended) and restart. Some models require manually cycling the ignition switch to clear the fault.
