Bosch Washer Won't Agitate - Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

A Bosch washer that won't agitate is usually caused by a failed door lock that prevents the motor from running or worn motor brushes.

Bosch Washer Won’t Agitate — What’s Happening

When your Bosch washer won’t agitate, the wash motor is not turning the drum back and forth during the wash cycle. This can happen because the control board is not commanding the motor to run, or because a safety interlock or mechanical condition is blocking normal operation.

If the door is not positively locked, Bosch washers will not run the drive system at all. The machine may fill with water but then sit idle, or it may skip straight to drain without any drum movement. On inverter-motor models, loss of agitation is often tied to the motor controller or drive electronics rather than a simple belt or coupling problem.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the complaint by running a normal wash cycle and watching whether the drum moves and whether the door stays locked when it should be running.
  2. Check your exact model number and write down any fault code displayed, because Bosch codes are model-family dependent and the same code can mean different things on different ranges.
  3. Inspect the door lock and latch for proper engagement and listen for a solid click when the door closes.
  4. Unplug the machine and rotate the drum by hand to check for free movement. Any stiffness, grinding, or binding points to bearings, spider arm, or other mechanical drag.
  5. On brushed-motor models, remove the motor cover and inspect the carbon brushes for length and wear. Replace them if they are shorter than the manufacturer’s minimum or unevenly worn.
  6. Inspect all wiring harnesses and connectors at the motor, door lock, and control board for loose pins, corrosion, or broken conductors.
  7. If the door lock works, the drum spins freely, and brushes are good (or the machine uses an inverter motor), test or replace the motor controller, inverter module, or main PCB.
  8. After repair, run a full functional test in wash and spin modes to confirm proper agitation, direction changes, and door-lock behavior.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a technician if you are not comfortable working inside the cabinet with electrical connections unplugged, or if diagnostic steps point to the motor controller or main board. Inverter-motor diagnostics often require live voltage and signal testing that is best left to a qualified service tech. If the drum is seized or bearings are grinding, that repair typically involves a full tub disassembly and is usually more cost-effective when done by a pro with the correct tools and replacement spider or seal kits.
