Because E18 is a circuit-level fault rather than a performance timeout, it often indicates a more specific electrical problem: a shorted or grounded heating element, a failed triac/relay on the control board, or a wiring short.


Step-by-Step Diagnosis

Step 1 — Power Reset

Always start here.

  1. Unplug the washer for 5–10 minutes.
  2. Reconnect and attempt a heated wash cycle.
  3. If E18 returns immediately (within 2–3 minutes of starting), the fault is consistent and you need hardware diagnosis.

Step 2 — Test the Heating Element for Ground Fault

A grounded heating element — one where the heating wire contacts the metal sheath — is the most common cause of E18. The control board detects this as an unsafe circuit condition.

  1. Unplug the machine.
  2. Access the heating element from the rear (remove the rear panel).
  3. Disconnect the element wiring connectors.
  4. Set your multimeter to resistance.
  5. Ground test: touch one probe to a terminal and the other to the metal body/casing of the element. A healthy element reads open circuit (infinite resistance) here. Any resistance reading (even high resistance) indicates a ground fault — replace the element.
  6. Continuity test: touch probes to the two main terminals. Should read 20–30 ohms. Open circuit = burned out. Near 0 = shorted element.

Either a grounded element or a shorted element will cause E18.

Step 3 — Test the NTC Temperature Sensor

A failed NTC sensor can cause the control board to detect an out-of-range reading and log E18 before heating begins.

  1. Locate the NTC sensor on or near the heating element (small component with two thin wires).
  2. Disconnect and test resistance.
  3. At room temperature, healthy NTC = approximately 10,000–15,000 ohms for most Bosch models.
  4. Open circuit or dramatically out-of-range reading = failed sensor.

Step 4 — Inspect the Heating Circuit Wiring

Before assuming the element or sensor has failed:

  1. Check both wiring connectors at the heating element. Look for burned or melted plastic, corroded pins, or loose connections.
  2. Trace the wires from the element back toward the control board. Look for pinched sections (common if the rear panel was removed and replaced incorrectly) or burned insulation.
  3. A single broken wire in the heating circuit will cause E18 even if element and sensor are both perfect.

Repair any damaged wiring with heat-shrink butt connectors and electrical tape.

Step 5 — Control Board Triac/Relay

If element, sensor, and wiring all test clean, the control board component that switches power to the heater (a triac or relay, depending on the model) may have failed. Triacs can fail in both directions: stuck open (no heat, F21) or stuck closed (overheating, E18) or with internal leakage (E18 circuit fault detection).

This is a board-level repair. On some models it’s possible to replace just the triac; on others, the full board is the repair path.

Resetting E18

After fixing the underlying component:

  1. Plug the machine back in.
  2. Select a Cotton 60°C program.
  3. Let the machine run through the heating phase — approximately 10–15 minutes into the cycle.
  4. If water warms up and the cycle completes, E18 is resolved.

Some Bosch models require a service reset: press and hold RPM/Spin and Temperature simultaneously for 5 seconds while the machine is powered on.
