⚡ Quick Answer

Detergent residue and hard water minerals gum up the dispenser door hinge. Clean the cup, track, and spring mechanism with warm water.

Bosch Dishwasher Not Dispensing Detergent — What’s Happening

When your Bosch dishwasher runs a full cycle but the detergent cup door stays closed, the control board thinks everything worked correctly. There is no error code for this problem because the wash pump, timer, and cycle logic are all functioning. The issue is a mechanical failure at the dispenser itself. The door should snap or slide open at a specific point in the wash sequence (usually during the first wash or prewash stage) when a small wax motor pushes a release mechanism. If that door never opens, your dishes come out dirty or still greasy because only plain water was used.

The machine cannot detect this failure because the wax motor operates independently once the control board sends a signal. If the motor is stuck, broken, or blocked by buildup, the door simply does not move. The dishwasher completes the cycle as programmed, unaware that the detergent never entered the tub.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Turn off power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit.
  2. Open the dishwasher door and manually open the detergent dispenser cup by pressing the release latch.
  3. Wipe the inside of the cup, the hinge area, and the surrounding door panel with a warm damp cloth to remove all detergent residue and mineral deposits.
  4. Check that the dispenser door spring moves freely and snaps closed without sticking or binding.
  5. Run an empty test cycle with no dishes and no detergent, then open the door carefully after 15 minutes to see if the dispenser door has opened.
  6. If the door remains closed after the test cycle, remove the inner door panel to access the wax motor and dispenser mechanism.
  7. Disconnect the wax motor leads and use a multimeter set to Rx1 (low resistance) to test for continuity across the motor terminals.
  8. If the wax motor shows infinite resistance or no continuity, replace the wax motor actuator assembly.

When to Call a Pro

If cleaning the dispenser and running a test cycle do not fix the problem, and you are not comfortable removing the inner door panel or testing electrical components with a multimeter, call a technician. Accessing the wax motor requires partial disassembly of the door, and incorrect reassembly can cause door seal leaks or control board damage. If the wax motor tests good but the dispenser still does not open, the issue may be a failed control board output, which requires professional diagnosis and programming.
