YSI Meter Error Codes — Quick Reference
YSI handheld meters and sondes are used for dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, and multi-parameter water quality testing. Error messages usually involve sensor recognition, calibration failure, membrane problems, and communication faults between the meter and sonde.
| Message / Code | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor Not Found | Probe not recognized | Clean contacts; reseat sensor |
| Cal Error | Calibration failed | Use fresh standards; retry |
| DO Error | Dissolved oxygen sensor issue | Check membrane and electrolyte |
| pH Error | pH probe unstable or failed | Rehydrate or replace probe |
| Cond Error | Conductivity sensor fault | Clean cell; check fouling |
| Memory Full | Logged data storage full | Export and clear memory |
| Battery Low | Battery voltage low | Replace or recharge battery |
| Comm Error | Sonde or cable communication problem | Check cable and connector pins |
Most Common Faults
Cal Error
Calibration failures are usually not meter failures. They are most often caused by old calibration solutions, contaminated standards, dirty probes, or temperature mismatch between the standard and the sensor. Always start with fresh standards and rinse thoroughly between steps.
DO Error
Dissolved oxygen probes are sensitive to membrane condition. Torn membranes, trapped air bubbles, or depleted electrolyte cause unstable readings and DO errors. Replace the membrane cap, refill electrolyte, and let the probe polarize per the manual before recalibrating.
Sensor Not Found
YSI field meters often live in wet environments, so connector corrosion is common. Clean the sensor and cable contacts carefully, inspect for bent pins, and reseat the probe firmly. If the error moves when you swap cables, the cable is the problem.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| DO membrane kit | Amazon | Includes membrane and electrolyte |
| pH probe | Amazon | Consumable item |
| Calibration solutions | Amazon | Use fresh, uncontaminated standards |
| Field cable | Amazon | Damaged pins cause comms faults |
When to Call a Pro
If multiple sensors fail recognition on the same handheld meter after connector cleaning, the instrument itself may have a board problem. For regulated water testing, replace questionable probes rather than chasing unstable field readings.
