Fluke Multimeter Error Codes — Complete Guide

⚡ Quick Answer

Fluke multimeter error codes for 87V, 289, 179, and ScopeMeter models: common display errors, causes, and troubleshooting steps.

Fluke Multimeter Error Codes — Quick Reference

Fluke handheld meters do not all use the same error code list. Some show messages like Err, OL, LEAd, or self-test failures during power-up. Advanced models like the Fluke 289 and ScopeMeter family show more detailed startup and memory-related messages. The table below covers the most common Fluke meter error states technicians encounter.

OLOver limit / open loopRange too low or circuit open

Most Common Problems

LEAd — Leads in Wrong Jack

This is one of the most useful safety warnings Fluke meters provide. If the red lead is plugged into the amps jack but the selector is set to volts or ohms, the meter displays LEAd. Move the red lead back to the V/ohms jack before measuring voltage. Ignoring this warning leads to blown fuses or worse.

OL — Over Limit or Open Circuit

OL does not mean the meter is broken. In ohms mode it usually means the circuit is open. In voltage or current mode it can mean the selected manual range is too low. Switch to autorange or choose a higher range.

No Current Reading — Blown Fuse

If a Fluke meter reads voltage and resistance fine but shows zero current no matter what, the internal HRC fuse is usually open. Open the back cover, remove the fuse, and test it with continuity. Replace only with the exact Fluke-specified high-rupture-capacity fuse.

Err or Self-Test Failure

If the meter throws an Err message on startup, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, and reinstall. If the error remains, the meter may have an internal board issue or corrupted calibration data. On higher-end Fluke models, a full calibration and diagnostic check by Fluke service is the right next step.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
9V or AA batteryAmazon | Model-specific
HRC current fuseAmazon | Use exact Fluke replacement spec
Test leadsAmazon | Damaged leads cause false faults
Rotary switch knob / contactsAmazon | Intermittent on older heavily used meters

When to Call a Pro

If a Fluke meter fails self-test repeatedly or has suspected calibration drift in a regulated environment, send it to an authorized calibration lab. For safety-rated meters, never substitute generic fuses.
