Watlow Temperature Controller Error Codes — Quick Reference
Watlow EZ-ZONE and F4 controllers are common in ovens, environmental chambers, packaging equipment, and thermal process skids. They use short text alarms or numeric error references tied to the input, control output, and limit functions.

Most Common Faults
SEN — Sensor Fault
Watlow controllers are unforgiving about bad sensor wiring. A loose thermocouple terminal, broken extension wire, or wrong input configuration triggers SEN quickly. Check the configured sensor type in the setup menu first, then inspect field wiring. On 3-wire RTDs, one loose leg can create unstable readings before the controller finally faults.
HiL — High Limit Active
Many systems use a separate Watlow high-limit controller that latches when temperature exceeds the safety setpoint. This is often a legitimate safety trip rather than a controller failure. Reset the limit only after confirming why the process overheated: welded contactor, failed SSR, bad PID tuning, or airflow loss in the oven.
Htr — Heater Current Alarm
If the controller is calling for heat but feedback current is too low, the heater circuit may be open. Check the SSR, fuse, contactor, and heater elements. If current is too high, look for a shorted element or SSR stuck on.
