Whirlpool Dryer Gas Valve Coil Replacement — What This Part Does
The gas valve solenoid coils open the burner gas valve when the igniter reaches temperature. When the dryer control signals for heat, voltage energizes the coils to pull open internal valve components, allowing gas to flow to the burner. The coils then hold the valve open while the flame sensor proves the flame is lit.
Coils fail when the wire windings weaken from repeated heat cycling or internal resistance drifts out of spec. A weak coil may work when cold but fail to hold the valve open after the first heating cycle. Sometimes a small internal component inside the coil assembly breaks or sticks, preventing proper actuation of the valve shaft.
Signs It Needs Replacing
- Dryer heats on the first cycle, then stops heating The burner lights once when the dryer is cold, then fails to relight on subsequent timed-dry or auto-dry cycles even though the drum keeps turning.
- Igniter glows orange but burner does not light You see the igniter element glow bright orange through the lower access panel or front opening, but you never hear the gas valve click or see flame.
- Intermittent heating that comes and goes Some loads dry normally while others stay damp, with no pattern related to load size or cycle selection.
- Clicking sound at the gas valve without ignition You hear a faint click from the burner area when the igniter glows, but the gas does not flow and no flame appears.
- Burner cycles on and off rapidly or fails mid-cycle The flame lights briefly then shuts off before the high-limit thermostat is satisfied, repeating the ignition sequence over and over or giving up entirely.
- Dryer runs cold after moving or after a power outage Heating worked fine until the dryer was moved for cleaning or power was interrupted, then the burner stopped lighting reliably even though gas supply is confirmed on.
How to Replace It
- Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet and turn off the gas supply valve on the line feeding the dryer.
- Remove the lint screen, then take out the two screws under the lint chute opening at the top front of the cabinet.
- Lift the top panel up and prop it open, then disconnect the door-switch wire harness if your model requires front-panel removal.
- Remove the screws securing the front panel (usually along the top edge under the lifted top and sometimes at the toe panel), then lift the panel up and off the cabinet frame to access the lower burner compartment.
- Locate the gas valve assembly on the burner housing (a rectangular metal box with two wire coils mounted on top and gas pipes connected at the side).
- Disconnect the wire-harness plugs from both solenoid coils, then remove the metal retaining bracket or clip that holds the coils onto the valve body.
- Lift each coil straight up and off the valve stem, noting the orientation and position of the two-terminal and three-terminal coils so you install the new ones in the same configuration.
- Slide the new coils from the replacement kit onto the valve stems in the same positions as the originals, press down firmly until they seat fully, then reinstall the retaining bracket and reconnect the wire harnesses to the matching terminals.
- Reinstall the front panel, lower the top, replace all screws, turn the gas supply back on, and plug in the dryer, then run a timed-dry cycle and watch through the open door or lower access to confirm the burner lights within two minutes and relights on every subsequent call for heat.
The Part You Need
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Gas valve solenoid coil kit | Amazon | Check your dryer’s model and serial number on the tag inside the door opening or on the rear panel. Whirlpool 29-inch dryers commonly use part number 279834, but the exact kit varies by platform, so match your model number when ordering the OEM or compatible coil set. |

When to Call a Pro
If you are not comfortable working around gas appliances, or if the new coils do not restore reliable heating, call a qualified appliance technician. The technician can test gas pressure at the valve, check flame-sensor current, measure igniter draw, and verify that the burner itself is not clogged or that the high-limit thermostat is not cycling the system prematurely. Any work involving gas connections, burner removal, or pressure testing is best left to a professional with combustion-analysis tools and the correct service data for your model. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
