Whirlpool Dishwasher Won’t Latch — What’s Happening

A Whirlpool dishwasher that won’t latch means the door is not mechanically engaging the latch strike, so the safety interlock prevents the cycle from starting. This is not a fault code issue. The door may look closed but is not fully latched, which Whirlpool specifically warns to verify before starting any cycle.

The problem is almost always mechanical: something is stopping the door from closing all the way, the latch hardware is damaged, or the door spring tension is set wrong. Whirlpool’s guidance points to spring adjustment, leveling, obstructions in the tub or racks, and damaged latch or strike components as the main reasons the door will not engage properly.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Open the door and inspect both racks, the tub opening, and the door seal area for protruding items, silverware, or debris. Remove anything preventing full closure.
  2. Check that the lower dish rack is installed correctly and not backward. Whirlpool calls this out as a common interference issue.
  3. Confirm the dishwasher is level front-to-back and side-to-side. Check that all leveling legs are firm on the floor and the unit front is aligned with the cabinet opening. Adjust legs as needed.
  4. Inspect the door spring tension. For stainless steel tub models, adjust the spring screws on both sides equally. For plastic tub models, move the spring ends to matching notches on both sides.
  5. Examine the door latch and strike plate. Look for a bent strike, worn or broken latch hook, loose mounting, or a cracked latch tongue. Check alignment between the door and the strike.
  6. Disconnect power at the breaker. Open the inner door panel and inspect the latch assembly and wiring harness. Confirm the latch physically moves and is not broken or jammed.
  7. If the latch or strike is damaged, replace the defective part. Reassemble the door panel, restore power, and test that the door latches smoothly before running a cycle.
  8. If all mechanical components look intact and the door still will not latch after spring adjustment and leveling, call a technician to assess cabinet fit or deeper alignment issues.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you’ve cleared all obstructions, adjusted the springs, confirmed the unit is level, and inspected the latch and strike but the door still will not latch. A technician can assess cabinet fit, hinge damage, or deeper alignment problems. Also call a pro if you’re not comfortable disconnecting power and opening the inner door panel to access the latch assembly, or if you need help with leveling or spring adjustment on your specific tub type.
