Whirlpool E15 Error Code - Causes & Fix

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

E15 means water detected in the base leak tray. Most often caused by a worn door seal or loose hose. Dry the base and fix the leak.

Difficulty Intermediate (DIY)
Est. time 15-60 min
Tools Multimeter , nut driver, screwdrivers

Whirlpool E15 Error Code — What It Means

The E15 code indicates that your Whirlpool dishwasher has detected water in the base pan or leak tray beneath the tub. This triggers the machine’s flood protection system, which stops normal operation and may force the unit into a drain-only mode to prevent further water damage. The dishwasher will remain locked out until the leak condition is cleared and the base is dried completely.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. Shut off power and water to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker and under-sink shutoff valve before any inspection or repair work.
  2. Remove the lower front kickplate and inspect the base pan for standing water, staining, mineral deposits, or other signs of leakage.
  3. Dry the base pan completely using towels or a wet/dry vacuum so the leak switch or float can reset after the repair is finished.
  4. Inspect the door gasket around the entire perimeter, paying close attention to the lower corners, and look for cuts, debris, flattening, or gaps that would allow water past the seal.
  5. Check all hose connections at the inlet valve, sump, pump, and drain path for dampness, crusting, loose clamps, or visible cracks in the hose material.
  6. Examine the inlet valve body and outlet fittings for seepage or corrosion, and confirm that the supply line is not dripping when pressurized or when the valve is closed.
  7. Reset the dishwasher by restoring power or holding the Start button for three seconds on some models to clear the fault, then run a short test cycle while observing the base area and all joints for any new moisture.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Door gasket (tub seal)Amazon | Match to your exact model number for proper fit around the door opening.
Water inlet valveAmazon | Replace if you see seepage, corrosion, or the valve does not close fully when de-energized.
Fill hose and clampsAmazon | Use braided stainless supply lines rated for appliance inlet pressures.
Leak switch or flood switch assemblyAmazon | Located in the base pan; replace if the switch fails to reset after the base is dried or if contacts are corroded.

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you cannot locate the source of the leak after inspecting the door seal, hoses, and inlet valve, or if the E15 code persists even after you have dried the base completely and confirmed that all external connections are secure. A technician can diagnose internal sump or pump housing leaks, test the leak switch or float assembly with proper tools, and access service documentation for your specific model. Also call for help if you are uncomfortable working with water supply lines under pressure or if the dishwasher requires removal from the cabinet to reach internal components.
