Scotsman Ice Machine Complete Troubleshooting Guide
Scotsman ice machines (Prodigy, Prodigy+, HID, HC, and older models) communicate faults via LED blink codes (on older units) or digital error codes on the Prodigy display.
Error Code Quick Reference
| Code | Series | Meaning | Quick Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| E1 | Prodigy | Long freeze cycle | Dirty condenser or low refrigerant |
| E2 | Prodigy | Harvest assist fault | Check auger or cutter (nugget only) |
| E3 | Prodigy | Long harvest | Check harvest heater and water |
| E4 | Prodigy | High temperature | Check condenser and ventilation |
| E5 | Prodigy | Water circuit fault | Check water valve and float |
| E6 | Prodigy | Control board fault | Replace control board |
| E7 | Prodigy | High product temp | Bin too full or condenser issue |
| E8 | Prodigy | Sensor fault | Check thermistor connections |
| 1 Blink | Older | Freeze too long | Dirty condenser |
| 2 Blinks | Older | Harvest too long | Harvest heater or water |
| 3 Blinks | Older | Safety limit | High temp or refrigerant |
Most Common Faults
E1 — Long Freeze Cycle
The freeze cycle exceeded the time limit. This is the most common Scotsman fault. Causes: dirty condenser (most common), low refrigerant charge, high ambient temperature, or scale on the evaporator. Clean the condenser first — on air-cooled units, the condenser is usually at the top or rear. Use a soft brush or compressed air.
E3 — Long Harvest
Ice is not releasing from the evaporator quickly enough. Check: harvest heater operation (should draw current during harvest), water temperature at inlet, water distributor holes not plugged, and ice thickness setting. If harvest heater draws no current, check the contactor or relay and the heater continuity.
E5 — Water Circuit Fault
Water is not entering the machine or is overflowing. Check:
- Water inlet valve — does it open during fill cycle? Measure coil resistance (should be approximately 200–500 ohms).
- Float switch — stuck high or low?
- Water inlet strainer — clean if plugged.
- Inlet water pressure — must be 20–80 psi.
E7 — High Product Temperature
The bin temperature is too high. This typically means the bin is overfull (bin sensor covered with ice), condenser is dirty, or ambient temperature is too high. Check the bin control thermostat/sensor.
Prodigy+ Self-Cleaning Feature
Prodigy+ models have an automatic cleaning cycle. When “Clean” appears, the machine is running the clean cycle. This is normal. Do not interrupt unless you need to add sanitizer.
Maintenance Schedule
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Every 6 months | Clean and sanitize machine |
| Annually | Replace water filter |
| As needed | Descale in hard water areas |
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| Water inlet valve | Amazon | Inspect on E5 faults |
| Harvest heater | Amazon | Test on E3 faults |
| Thermistor (bin or evap) | Amazon | Replace on E8 sensor faults |
| Condenser fan motor | Amazon | Replace on high temp faults |
Jump to Fix
- E1 long freeze → Clean condenser → Check refrigerant → Inspect evaporator scale
- E3 long harvest → Test harvest heater → Check water inlet temp → Verify water flow
- E5 water circuit → Check inlet valve → Inspect float → Check water pressure
