Samsung Washer Door Won’t Unlock — What’s Happening

A Samsung washer door that won’t unlock means the machine is still holding the door lock engaged because the control believes it is unsafe to open the door. The door lock will stay engaged until the washer has stopped and conditions are safe. If the drum still contains water or the cycle has not fully ended, the door remains locked.

This complaint does not correspond to one universal error code. Depending on model and region, you may see codes like dL, dE, dS, LO, or LC, all pointing to door lock or door-closed sensing issues. In service terms, the door interlock has not been released or the washer has not completed the conditions required to release it, usually because it thinks water is still present or the lock circuit is not in a valid state.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the cycle status and confirm the washer is not mid-cycle, paused, or still draining, then wait a few minutes if the cycle just ended.
  2. Check if Child Lock is enabled and clear it using the model-specific button hold sequence (usually holding two buttons for three seconds).
  3. Power reset the washer by unplugging it for at least five minutes to clear any control glitch, then plug back in and test.
  4. Check for trapped water by pressing lightly on the door and listening for a heavy drum, then open the lower front access panel and use the emergency drain hose to drain the tub fully.
  5. Remove and clean the drain pump filter and inspect the drain hose and pump path for coins, lint, or debris that would prevent full draining.
  6. Inspect the door latch area and strike for clothing, debris, warped parts, or misalignment, and verify the door closes squarely.
  7. If the door still will not release, test the door lock assembly electrically and mechanically, and replace it if it does not unlock after drainage and reset.
  8. If the lock assembly is good, move to control board and harness diagnosis to confirm the board is sending unlock commands and that wiring continuity is intact.

When to Call a Pro

If you cannot safely drain the tub using the emergency drain hose, or if the door lock does not release after draining and a power reset, call a qualified appliance technician. If you have tested the door lock assembly and wiring and suspect a control board fault, professional diagnosis with a meter and service manual is recommended. Never force the door open, as this can damage the lock mechanism and door frame.
