Rinnai Error Code 32 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Rinnai error code 32 means, why the overheat cutoff trips, and how to diagnose and fix it.

Rinnai Error Code 32 — What It Means

Error code 32 on a Rinnai tankless water heater indicates the outlet water temperature exceeded the safe maximum (typically around 90–99°C / 194–210°F depending on model). The outgoing water thermal fuse or high-temperature limiter opened to prevent scalding and heat exchanger damage. This is a non-resettable or manually-reset thermal cutout on some models — the unit will not restart until the cutout is addressed.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Locate and test the thermal fuse — With power off, locate the outlet pipe thermal fuse (a small inline fuse clipped to the hot water outlet pipe). Test continuity with a multimeter. Open circuit = blown fuse; replace with Rinnai OEM fuse rated for the same temperature and voltage.
  2. Check outlet thermistor — Disconnect the outlet thermistor connector and measure resistance. Compare to the model’s temperature-resistance chart. A reading significantly out of spec indicates a drifting thermistor — replace it.
  3. Descale the heat exchanger — If the unit has been in service for more than 2 years in a hard water area, flush with white vinegar or a commercial descaler through the service port valves for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Evaluate low-flow scenarios — If code 32 occurs when a single low-flow fixture is running, consider installing a minimum flow regulator at the unit inlet or checking that the unit’s minimum flow sensor is calibrated correctly.
  5. Reset and test — After replacing the thermal fuse (if blown) and addressing scale, restore power and run the unit at normal demand. Monitor outlet temperature.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Thermal fuse (outlet)Amazon | Rinnai OEM; one-time device, must be replaced after trip
Outlet thermistorAmazon | NTC type; match model-specific part number
Descaling solutionAmazon | White vinegar or Rinnai-approved descaler

When to Call a Pro

If the thermal fuse blows repeatedly after replacement, the root cause (scale or flow issue) has not been resolved. A licensed plumber should perform a full heat exchanger inspection and potentially install a water treatment system upstream of the unit.
