Rinnai error code 12 indicates flame failure — the unit ignited but the flame was not detected within the required period, or was detected and then lost before the end of the heating call. Step-by-Step Fix
- Check gas supply — At the unit, confirm the manual gas valve handle is parallel to the gas line (open). If other gas appliances in the home are working normally, your supply is likely adequate.
- Reset the unit — Press the On/Off button twice to clear the code. Observe the startup: you should hear the fan spin up, then clicking (ignition), then the burner flame sound.
- Inspect the flame rod — Access the burner section. The flame rod is a stainless probe positioned in the flame. Clean the rod tip with steel wool — remove all visible oxidation. Reinstall.
