Maytag Dryer Gas Valve Coils Replacement — What This Part Does

The gas valve solenoid coil kit is the burner valve actuator assembly that opens the gas valve during ignition. It consists of two coils mounted on the gas valve: a booster coil and a holding coil. When the dryer control signals for heat, these coils energize to open the valve and allow gas to flow to the burner.

The coils fail most often due to weak or intermittent windings that work when cold but fail after warming up during use. This causes the igniter to glow, but the gas valve never opens fully or opens only at the start of a cycle and then shuts off. Continuity is lost in the coil windings, preventing reliable valve operation.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the dryer from the electrical outlet and shut off the gas supply valve at the wall or floor connection behind the dryer.
  2. Remove the front panel or lift the top of the dryer cabinet to access the burner assembly, following your model’s cabinet disassembly sequence.
  3. Locate the gas valve coil kit mounted on top of the gas valve at the burner assembly.
  4. Disconnect the wire connectors from both coils, noting that one coil uses a 2-wire connector and the other uses a 3-wire connector, and do not mix them up.
  5. Remove the mounting bracket screws that hold the coil assembly to the gas valve.
  6. Pull the old coils straight off the valve stems and discard them.
  7. Slide the new coils onto the valve stems in the same positions as the originals, matching the 2-wire and 3-wire coils to their correct locations.
  8. Reinstall the mounting bracket and screws to secure the coil assembly to the gas valve.
  9. Reconnect the wire connectors to the correct coils, ensuring the 2-wire and 3-wire plugs go to their matching coils.
  10. Reassemble the dryer cabinet, restore the gas supply, plug in the dryer, and run a test cycle to verify ignition and consistent heating.

When to Call a Pro

If you are not comfortable working with gas appliances, call a qualified appliance technician or gas service professional. Burner, igniter, and gas valve work involves shutting off gas supply lines and testing ignition systems, which require proper training and tools. If the new coils do not restore ignition, or if you smell gas at any point, stop work immediately and contact a professional to diagnose control board, flame sensor, igniter, or gas supply issues. For gas line, burner, or igniter work, or if you ever smell gas, stop and call a licensed technician.
