Maytag Dishwasher Won’t Fill with Water — What’s Happening

A Maytag dishwasher that won’t fill with water is experiencing an interrupted fill sequence. This is not an error code but a symptom that the machine is either being commanded to fill and water isn’t entering the tub, or a safety circuit is intentionally stopping the fill.

Common inhibit points include the water inlet valve, the overfill protection float, the door switch or latch, the household water supply, and the main control board. The machine may start its cycle but never progress past the fill stage, or it may not start at all if the door isn’t latched properly.

Most Likely Causes

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Verify the household water supply valve under the sink is fully open and the fill hose is not kinked or crushed.
  2. Lift and drop the overfill float inside the tub to confirm it moves freely up and down, and inspect the guide tube for debris or obstructions.
  3. Check that the door is fully closed and latched, and listen for the door switch click when you close it.
  4. Remove the water inlet valve from the supply line and inspect the internal screens for sediment or blockage.
  5. Test the float switch by pressing it down manually and checking for continuity change from open to closed with a multimeter.
  6. Disconnect power, then measure the inlet valve coil for an open circuit or visible damage such as cracks in the valve body.
  7. Restore power and use a multimeter to test for 120 volts at the inlet valve terminals during the fill portion of the cycle.
  8. If voltage is present at the valve but no water enters, replace the inlet valve. If voltage is absent and upstream switches test good, inspect wiring and the control board.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Water inlet valveAmazon | Most common electrical or mechanical fill failure.
Overfill float assemblyAmazon | Includes the float and guide tube.
Float switchAmazon | Signals tub water level to the control board.
Door latch or door switchAmazon | Required for the cycle to start and fill to begin.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

Call a professional if you’ve confirmed the water supply is open and the float moves freely but the dishwasher still won’t fill, or if you’re uncomfortable working with 120-volt circuits during live testing. A technician can test the control board output, trace wiring faults, and confirm whether the board or valve is at fault when voltage and continuity readings are inconclusive.
