⚡ Quick Answer

Usually a frozen or clogged defrost drain tube. Clear the blockage with hot water and a flexible brush to restore proper drainage.

LG Refrigerator Water Leaking on Floor — What’s Happening

Water pooling under your LG refrigerator means liquid is escaping the normal drainage path. During the defrost cycle, ice melts off the evaporator coils and should flow down a drain tube into a pan underneath where it evaporates. When this drain gets blocked or frozen, water backs up and spills out onto your floor, usually appearing at the front base. Less commonly, the leak comes from a loose water supply line or a faulty filter connection at the back or inside the door.

This is a symptom, not a displayed error code. LG refrigerators rarely show codes for water leaks unless a sensor tied to the defrost system fails separately. The water you see is either defrost runoff that cannot drain properly or supply water escaping before it reaches the dispenser or ice maker.

How to Diagnose and Fix

  1. Pull the refrigerator forward and inspect the rear water line connection and the floor underneath with a flashlight to determine if water is coming from the back (supply line) or front base (drain overflow).
  2. If water appears at the front base, remove the rear freezer panel or evaporator cover to access the defrost drain hole and look for standing water or visible ice blockage in the tube.
  3. Use a heat gun on low setting or a steamer to melt any ice blocking the drain tube, then clear remaining debris with a flexible drain brush or a zip-tie pushed gently through the hole.
  4. Flush the drain tube with hot water (around 140°F) poured slowly into the drain hole until you see it flow freely into the drain pan beneath the refrigerator.
  5. Check the water filter by removing it and inspecting the O-rings and housing for cracks or damage, then reinstall it firmly with a quarter-turn twist to confirm proper seating.
  6. Examine the rear water supply line and door hinge connections for moisture, tighten any loose compression fittings, and replace any cracked tubing or damaged O-rings.
  7. Test the dispenser by pressing the paddle and releasing it, watching for any continued dripping from the nozzle that indicates a stuck valve or debris in the actuator.
  8. Inspect the drain pan under the unit for cracks or overflow, and confirm the evaporator fan runs during normal operation to allow moisture evaporation.

Parts You Might Need

PartNotes
Defrost drain tube heater kitAmazon | Prevents re-freezing of the drain line in LG models prone to ice blockage.
Water inlet valve O-ring setAmazon | Replaces worn rubber seals at supply line connections and door hinge fittings.
Water filter housing assemblyAmazon | Needed if the filter compartment itself is cracked or threads are stripped.

If your appliance also shows a code on the display, these match this problem:

When to Call a Pro

If clearing the drain tube does not stop the leak or if water reappears within a few days, the defrost heater or thermostat may be failing and causing repeated freeze-ups. Call a tech if you find active leaks inside the door cavity or behind sealed panels, as this requires disassembly of the hinge and internal water routing. Also call a pro if the evaporator coils have visible frost buildup that does not clear after a manual defrost, which points to a defrost cycle control issue that needs electronic diagnosis.
