LG Refrigerator gF Error Code — What It Means
The gF code (shown as Er gF) means the water flow meter is not seeing normal flow, or the water supply to the refrigerator is too low. The board watches the flow sensor during a fill, and when it does not count enough flow it logs gF.
The common causes are a closed or low pressure supply, a kinked line, a clogged or weak water inlet valve, or a failed flow sensor. Most cases start at the supply side before any part gets replaced.
Common Causes
- Low water pressure Pressure under about 20 psi does not move enough water for the flow meter to register a normal fill.
- Closed or kinked supply A partly closed shutoff or a kinked supply line starves the fill and trips gF.
- Clogged or weak water inlet valve A valve fouled by scale or with a weak solenoid cannot pass enough water on demand.
- Failed flow sensor A flow meter that reads out of range gives the board no valid flow count.
- Frozen fill line Ice in the supply tube blocks water and looks like no flow to the sensor.
Step-by-Step Fix
- Unplug the unit for about 60 seconds, then restore power and plug it into a direct outlet rather than a power strip.
- Confirm the household water shutoff is fully open and the line behind the fridge is not kinked.
- Check that house water pressure sits in the normal range of about 40 to 120 psi.
- Inspect the fill tube for ice and thaw it if the line is frozen.
- Test the flow sensor resistance at its connector and compare against the expected range of about 4k to 30k ohms.
- Test the water inlet valve for continuity and proper flow, and replace it if it is clogged or the solenoid is open.
- Replace the flow sensor if it reads out of range after the supply checks out good.
Parts Often Needed
| Part | Notes |
|---|---|
| LG refrigerator water inlet valve | Amazon | Match by model number. The valve feeds both the dispenser and the ice maker on most units. |
| Water flow sensor or flow meter | Amazon | Replace if resistance is out of range after supply checks pass. |
| Refrigerator water supply line | Amazon | Swap a kinked or split line feeding the fridge. |
When to Call a Pro
Call a plumber or technician if your home water pressure is low at the source, or if gF returns after a new inlet valve and flow sensor with a verified supply. Persistent low flow can stem from house plumbing rather than the refrigerator.
