LG Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve Replacement - Signs & How-To

3 min read
⚡ Quick Answer

Failed water inlet valve causes no ice, no water dispensing, or leaks. Replacing the solenoid valve assembly restores dispenser and ice maker function.

LG Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve Replacement — What This Part Does

The water inlet valve is a solenoid-operated assembly that opens to admit water to your LG refrigerator’s dispenser and ice maker. When the dispenser button is pressed or the ice maker signals for water, the valve’s solenoid coil energizes and opens a port to let water flow through tubing to the correct destination.

The valve fails when its solenoid coil burns out, when mineral deposits or debris prevent it from sealing or opening properly, or when the valve body cracks and leaks. Mechanical wear over time can also stop the valve from opening reliably. Because the valve is an assembly, technicians replace the entire unit rather than attempting to rebuild it.

Signs It Needs Replacing

How to Replace It

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet and turn off the water supply shutoff valve behind or beneath the unit.
  2. Pull the refrigerator away from the wall to access the rear panel.
  3. Remove the screws securing the rear or condenser access cover and lift the panel off to expose the water inlet valve assembly.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the water inlet valve by pressing the release tabs and pulling straight off.
  5. Remove the mounting screw or screws holding the valve bracket to the refrigerator cabinet.
  6. Press the locking collar or squeeze the clip on each water tubing connector and pull the tubing straight off the valve ports.
  7. Install the new water inlet valve assembly by reconnecting the water tubing until each tube clicks or locks into place, then secure the mounting screw and plug in the electrical connectors.
  8. Reinstall the rear access cover, turn on the water supply, and plug in the refrigerator.
  9. Check for leaks at the valve connections and test the water dispenser and ice maker to verify proper operation.

The Part You Need

When to Call a Pro

If you are uncomfortable working with both water and electrical connections, or if you find that the new valve does not fix the problem and suspect low water pressure or a clogged filter upstream, call a technician. A pro can test solenoid resistance, check flow meter readings, and rule out supply-line or pressure issues that mimic a bad valve. If water is leaking and you cannot locate the source, a technician can inspect the entire water delivery system to prevent damage to your home.
