Lennox Error Code 332 — Causes & Fix

⚡ Quick Answer

What Lennox error code 332 means, why the limit device opens, and how to diagnose and fix restricted airflow.

Lennox Error Code 332 — What It Means

Lennox error code 332 indicates an open limit device. The high-limit switch is a thermal safety located on the heat exchanger or plenum. When the supply air temperature exceeds the switch’s set point — typically 170–200°F — it opens and shuts off the gas valve to prevent overheating. Code 332 means the furnace tripped this limit, usually because heat could not be removed from the heat exchanger fast enough.

Common Causes

Step-by-Step Fix {#fix}

  1. Replace the air filter immediately — If the filter is gray, matted, or visibly clogged, swap it for a fresh one of the correct MERV rating. 1-inch filters should be changed monthly in heavy-use seasons.
  2. Check and open all supply/return vents — Walk the home and confirm every register is open and unobstructed. Ensure no furniture is blocking return air grilles.
  3. Allow the furnace to cool — The limit switch is auto-resetting on most Lennox models. After 15–30 minutes with power on and blower running, the switch may close and allow the furnace to restart.
  4. Test the blower motor — Set the thermostat fan to ON (continuous) and confirm the blower runs at full speed. A weak or single-speed blower that runs slowly indicates a failing capacitor or motor.
  5. Check the limit switch manually — With power off, use a multimeter set to continuity. Probe across the limit switch terminals — you should read continuity when the furnace is cool. An open reading at room temperature means the switch has failed.
  6. Inspect ductwork for collapse or disconnection — In the attic or crawlspace, verify that flex duct has not kinked, collapsed, or separated from a plenum takeoff.
  7. Reset the system — After resolving the airflow issue, restore power and run a full cycle. Monitor the supply air temperature if possible — it should stay below 140°F in normal operation.

Parts Often Needed

PartNotes
Air filter (1” or 4” media)Amazon | Replace every 1–3 months depending on MERV rating and household conditions
High-limit switchAmazon | Match to Lennox model; verify opening temperature rating
Blower motor run capacitorAmazon | Replace if motor hums but does not start at full speed
Blower motorAmazon | Replace if capacitor is good but motor is still weak or overheating

When to Call a Pro

If the limit trips repeatedly after filter and airflow corrections, call an HVAC technician to perform a static pressure measurement and blower performance test. Persistent 332 faults can indicate duct design problems or a failing heat exchanger that restricts internal airflow.
